The Value Of Research In Evidence-Based Practice Discussion
Discussion Response
Hi,
Your discussion post offers an informative analysis on evidence-based practice (EBP), implications for patient quality and safety, and how research knowledge supports nursing practice role. I like that you define EBP by incorporating current evidence with nurse with patient values. In addition, I like that you associate EBP with using information in making care decisions. Besides that, I like that your example looks at a situation in which EBP would be applied. Furthermore, I like that you link the research knowledge gained with the ability to develop innovative solutions. While your discussion post is informative, I feel that it can be improved on by including three points. First, EBP should incorporate nurse experience as this helps in developing a scientific basis for thinking critically, analyzing complex situations, performing health assessments and making decisions (Li, Cao & Zhu, 2019)The Value Of Research In Evidence-Based Practice Discussion.

Second, the application of EBP should detail specific sequential steps. For instance, it can talk of cultivating sprit of inquiry, asking PICOT question, searching for evidence, critically appraising evidence, integrating evidence, evaluating change, and disseminating outcomes (Hall & Roussel, 2022). Third, the use of knowledge gained about research should be more comprehensive to include improving familiarity with nursing research, allowing for interpretation and application of nursing research, and creating awareness for facilitating patient advocacy efforts (Grove & Gray, 2022)The Value Of Research In Evidence-Based Practice Discussion. Overall, I feel that your discussion post is presented well, but can be improved by including the three mentioned points.

Discussion Post
Describe how you will use evidence-based practice to improve patient quality and safety in your health care setting.
Evidence-based practice (EBP) is a health care approach that makes use of the most current, available, high quality evidence and experience to improve patient quality and safety within the health care setting even as it reduces overall health care costs and variations in health outcomes. This shows that EBP is dependent on providing health care services underpinned by current EBP based on current evidence and experience. The systematic implementation of EBP helps in improving patient quality and safety through providing a scientific basis for thinking critically, analyzing complex situations, performing health assessments and making decisions (Li, Cao & Zhu, 2019)The Value Of Research In Evidence-Based Practice Discussion.
EBP is used in a systematic approach that involves seven steps. First, cultivating a spirit of inquiry that presents the problem as a question. For instance, if the facility reports high fall rates among geriatric inpatients, then the inquiry can focus on how nurse staffing affects the fall rate. Second, asking the clinical question in a PICOT format. The clinical question can be: “In geriatric inpatients (Patient population), how does high nurse-to-patient ratio (Intervention) compared with low nurse-to-patient ratio (Comparison) affect the fall rates (Outcome) during a four-month period (Time)?” Third, searching for the best current evidence that answers the clinical question. This involves searching current publications relevant to the clinical question. Fourth, critically appraising the evidence to identify which ones have conclusions that support the EBP change and which ones present a contrary conclusion. Fifth, integrating the evidence with clinical expertise and patient values and preferences to present a plan for implementing the change. Sixth, evaluating the change outcomes to determine if they match the evidence. This focuses on monitoring the change to identify implementation flaws and where improvements can be made. Seventh, sharing the EBP outcomes in publications, presentations and discussions so that the EBP is perpetuated as evidence-based (Hall & Roussel, 2022).
Explain how the knowledge gained about research in this course will support your role in practice as a nursing professional.
Knowledge gained about research supports practice role as a nursing professional. First, it improves familiarity with nursing research thus allowing an individual to understand and interpret nursing research. Second, it facilitates efforts to apply nursing research, showing that nursing can be combined with the latest research findings to achieve optimal nursing care. Third, it has created awareness that nursing research is valuable to nurses outside the direct care setting, such as understanding how smoking affects unborn babies. This is useful for turning nurses into better advocates for patients and allowing them to provide the best possible care (Grove & Gray, 2022)The Value Of Research In Evidence-Based Practice Discussion.

Week 6: Tying it All Together
Once a nursing researcher or nursing professional has conducted analyses on their collected data, what can they conclude about their research and research question?
The last and final phase of the research process involves drawing conclusions about research findings as well as tying them into meaningful solutions for clinical nursing practice. How might a nursing researcher or nursing professional relate their research findings to solutions for improved quality of care and patient safety? How might drawing certain conclusions from research findings impact your health care setting?
This week, you will examine two content areas.
Part I: Drawing Conclusions About Research Findings and Their Implications for Clinical Practice
Part I focuses on the last phase of the research process, namely drawing conclusions about the findings and discussing their implications for clinical practice. You will examine how the findings contribute to clinical practice and how the findings might add to new knowledge and the existing literature on a topic. You will consider how the characteristics of well-written conclusions and implications, including consideration of the study’s limitations, recommendations for future research, and variation in the quality of presenting these areas in published research may impact nursing practice The Value Of Research In Evidence-Based Practice Discussion.
Part II: The Value of Research in Evidence-Based Practice and Translational Science
Part II focuses on what has been explored about the value of quantitative and qualitative research in evidence-based practice and translational science in nursing.
Learning Objectives
Students will:
- Evaluate how evidence-based practice will improve patient quality and safety
- Evaluate the importance of the interpretation, conclusion, and clinical implications of clinical research articles in evidence-based practice
- Evaluate effectiveness of interventions on decreasing medication errors in health care settings The Value Of Research In Evidence-Based Practice Discussion

Discussion: Use of Research in Clinical Practice
Throughout this course, you have examined and considered how the research process contributes to the field of clinical nursing practice. More than just an exercise in developing a research question, searching the literature to guide future research, and performing actual data collection/data analysis, the conclusions you draw from your research findings are useful in helping to develop and enact effective clinical practice. In essence, the process of conducting research contributes to positive social change in that the solutions that you might propose as a nurse researcher and professional will likely impact quality of care and patient safety. The Value Of Research In Evidence-Based Practice Discussion
For this Discussion, read the book chapter by Titler (2008) presented in this week’s resources that describes evidence-based practice and translational science, as well as the kind of research needed for both. Then, reflect on how the knowledge you gained about research will support your effort as a nursing professional to improve patient quality and safety.
By Day 3
Describe how you will use evidence-based practice to improve patient quality and safety in your health care setting. Be specific and provide examples. Then, explain how the knowledge gained about research in this course will support your role in practice as a nursing professional. Then, describe how you will use evidence-based practice to improve patient quality and safety. Be sure to include in your Discussion any unanswered questions that need to be considered by your classmates and/or Instructor.
Note: Post a three paragraph (at least 350 words) response directly in the response text box rather than as an attachment. Be sure to use evidence, in-text citations, and essay-level writing skills, including the use of transitional material and organizational frames. Use the writing resources to develop your post.
