An arrhythmia is a heart disorder that affects the rate at which the heart beats. It is an irregular heartbeat, including faster or slower than average. People with arrhythmia may experience dizziness and lightheadedness. Early detection of arrhythmia is important in the alleviation of the arrhythmic burden in patients. Early detection makes it easier to treat the condition, prevent risks associated with the disease, and preserve the quality of life. This paper presents relevant research studies to support the value of arrhythmia detection and the need to improve nursing competence.

Bazrafkan et al. (2018) conducted a study that evaluated the effect of cardiac arrhythmias simulator software on the learning of nurses. The study established that the use of cardiac arrhythmia simulators was an effective intervention in increasing nurses’ learning. The intervention increased nurses’ knowledge of the diagnosis and treatment of arrhythmia. The results of this study can be used in implementing a change in practice to promote learning through the use of software-based simulators. Chen et al. (2022) studied the competency of nurses in interpreting electrocardiograms. The study revealed that the knowledge and competency levels of nurses in the interpretation of electrocardiograms varied due to several factors, such as lack of regular training and inadequate exposure to electrocardiogram interpretation. The study recommended regular and standard training to improve competency in tool interpretation. Nurse managers should create opportunities for learning to promote and increase nurses’ competency. Çıkrıkçı Isık et al. (2020) conducted a prospective study on the efficacy of the CRISP (Cardiac Rhythm for Simple People) method in improving the accuracy of nurses in ECG interpretation. The study established a considerable difference between nurses with postgraduate education in ECG interpretation and those who did not have it. The CRISP method was found to be effective in accurate ECG interpretation with training. This study can be used to guide change in practice by training nurses to improve their skills and competencies in ECG interpretation. Ho et al. (2021) conducted a cross-sectional descriptive study to assess nurses’ ability to interpret ECGs by asking pertinent questions. The study revealed that the capability of nurses to interpret ECG was fair. Nursing experience and ECG training were major factors in determining nurses’ capabilities. The study recommended more training to increase knowledge in ECG interpretation to enable appropriate patient treatment.

Gorfinkel et al. (1976) studied the use of electrocardiographic radiotelemetry in detecting arrhythmias in patients and established that telemetry is feasible in arrhythmia detection. The study recommended monitoring of patients in coronary care. Keller et al. (2020) assessed the different levels of arrhythmia recognition competency in nurses using a refined instrument. The study findings were instrumental in defining competency in nurses caring for ECG-monitored patients. The study indicates a need for a standard tool for testing nurses’ ECG interpretation competency. In summary, the reviewed articles on arrhythmia have identified training as a critical factor in increasing nurses’ knowledge and competency in ECG interpretation. Accurate ECG interpretation leads to early detection of arrhythmia, and further risks of the disorder can be mitigated. A standard tool for measuring nurses’ competency should be developed. The reviewed studies can provide guidance when implementing an evidence-based practice whose aim is to increase nurses’ competency through relevant education and regular training.
