The system development life cycle is a model applied in project management that highlights the various stages used in project development (Akinsola et al., 2020). The system development lifecycle can be applied to both technical and non-technical systems. The system helps to guide the various project development phases, such as planning, implementation, and evaluation which are essential in ensuring that the systems align with the needs of the organizations. The system development life cycle is a continuous cycle that is ongoing and continuous. In implementing a new health information technology such as electronic health records, it is essential to include all the affected stakeholders in the project team to ensure that the project is successful. Failure to include nurses in all stages of the system development life cycle will lead to adverse outcomes in patient outcomes and other healthcare efficiencies (Pepito & Locsin, 2019)The Steps Of The Systems Development Life Cycle Discussion. In our organization, all stakeholders, including the nurses and nurse informaticists, were included in the system development life cycle.
The planning phase of the system development life cycle involves establishing the problem, identifying the specific elements of the project, the financial needs, and the general outcome of implementing the project. At this stage of the SDLC, the nurse’s input is based on the ability to comply and effectively use the system in patient care while emphasizing the project’s cost-effectiveness. When our organization notified the nurses of the impending changes to the old paperwork to be replaced by the electronic health records, the young nurses warmly welcomed the suggestion. The project team, including the nurse informaticists, evaluated our interaction with the new system, such as charting, computer literacy, and the ability to take orders from physicians (Collins et al., 2017)The Steps Of The Systems Development Life Cycle Discussion. Including nurses at this point was important because it allowed us to familiarize ourselves with the system before implementation.
Before implementing the EHR, nurses were given one week to study and interact with the new system. The nurses were extensively trained on the usage of the system, including charts with the use of the EHR. We highlighted issues with the flowsheets essential to patient documentation during the training. This stage was essential because if nurses were not trained, it would be difficult for us to solve some of the emerging issues after its implementation.
During the implementation phase, the system support team helped in further training on using the electronic health records system by highlighting some of the elements that had not been highlighted previously. The training during the implementation phase helped ensure that even the older generation of nurses could navigate the system efficiently. One of the advantages of training among nurses includes the ability to take orders without errors such as repeated procedures.
During the maintenance and evaluation stages, the nurse informaticists identified some evidence-based practices that could be implemented to improve the workflow and improve patient outcomes. Also, before any improvements were made, there was communication by sending emails to notify the staff of the changes that could affect the system operations. Also, learning modules were developed to continuously train the staff to enhance competency among nurses and physicians who are the system’s primary users.
