Professionalism and Social Media
It is not conceivable in today’s world that any person below the age of 45 years would stay for even a day without checking their social media pages such as Facebook. This is because the advent and rapid development of the Internet and the smartphone has meant that virtually every facet of our lives has something to do with the smartphone. For the healthcare professionals such as nurses, it has become quite difficult to strike that delicate balance between professionalism and personal life as lived through the social media (Denecke et al., 2015)The Social Media And The Development Of The Smartphone Assignment. In a bid to stay connected and to share with friends on social media, the professional nurse may find that they have difficulties maintaining professionalism and respecting the ethics that go with the nursing profession. The purpose of this paper is to look at this influence that the social media has on the professional nurse from a personal perspective.
Inappropriate Social Media Posts
While examining my previous social media posts from Facebook and Instagram, I found that indeed there are posts that I made that may border on disrespect to the profession and unethical behavior (ICN, 2012). For instance, I have previously shared some details of the procedures that I had done at the workplace with my friends who themselves know that I am a nurse. Even though I did not explicitly mention the names of the patients involved, any person who might have been at my workplace would easily figure out who I was referring to. I have also found out that I have previously participated without realising it in making fun of some persons who actually had chromosomal disability (Down’s syndrome) on Instagram. As the others were making fun of her it was clear that they did not know this. However, as a nurse with this knowledge I should have known better and desisted from making snide comments about her eyes (ANA, 2015; ICN, 2012)The Social Media And The Development Of The Smartphone Assignment. This is something that I admit is unbecoming of a nurse. The International Council of Nurses code of ethics (ICN, 2012) in its preamble states that every person should be respected regardless of what status they are in within a given context.
Responsibility for Upholding a Befitting Standard of Conduct
The nursing profession by its very nature is seen as a very respectable and noble profession. Nurses are thus respected members of the society and the same society expects some kind of respectable behavior from them. This places a heavy responsibility on the nurses who must maintain ethical awareness (Milliken et al., 2018), respect for confidentiality of their patients as enshrined in the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act or HIPAA (Edemekong & Haydel, 2019), and fidelity to the nursing codes of conduct and ethics (ANA, 2015; ICN, 2012). A nurse may for instance discuss or post some details about what they do a work without realizing that they are actually violating the provisions of HIPAA. A good example is posting that obesity is a bad condition and that one is currently struggling with a patient who is morbidly obese. Without even mentioning the patient’s name, this already is in breach of the provisions of patient confidentiality The Social Media And The Development Of The Smartphone Assignment.
Christian Worldview
There are parts of my social media posts that are also good as I found out. For instance, when I posted about the upcoming diabetes walk and also created awareness about the need for pro-life legislation; I was valuing and respecting human life and value. The parts that I should improve on are those in which I discuss some borderline intimate details concerning my patients and their conditions.
Conclusion
The advent of the social media and the development of the smartphone have meant that it is very easy to share information on social media. This means that it has equally become very easy to veer off as a professional nurse and inadvertently share intimate details concerning a patient. This would be both unethical and illegal as it would violate the provisions of HIPAA. Therefore, nurses must carry themselves with the professionalism and respect that is expected of them both at work and off work The Social Media And The Development Of The Smartphone Assignment.
