Suicide, self-harm, suicide ideation and suicide attempts are critical public health challenges in the young population. Suicidal ideation entails planning to execute or thinking about suicide. The thoughts range from mere wishes to actual plans and intent. Although one condition does not translate to physically harmful behaviours, most adolescents with suicide ideation attempt suicide at least once in their lifetimes. Consequently, healthcare providers must utilize technological tools to identify those at risk of suicide ideation, establish conversations regarding the condition and locate nearby healthcare services for individuals.

The SAMHSA suicide safe application provides healthcare providers with unique features that can help prevent suicide in a patient with a history of suicide ideation. A behavioural healthcare provider attending to such a patient can use the SAFE-T approach on the application to assess the patient’s risk factors,  the level of risk for suicide and develop appropriate intervention and follow-up plan. The tool also has patient-focused educational materials which the provider can share with the patient to facilitate their recovery process (SAMHSA, 2015)The SAMHSA Suicide Safe Application Discussion. Additionally, the provider should use the behavioural health services locator on the application to locate and refer the patient to nearby community mental health services and healthcare providers. Lastly, the provider should access a crisis line and share it with the patient to allow them to reach out in case they need an emergency response.

Applications are effective tools that enable healthcare providers and patients to access healthcare-related information remotely. Therefore, in addition to the SAMHSA application, other mental health Apps help in crisis intervention (Chandrashekar, 2018). Self-help for anxiety management is a well-being tool that enables patients to self-manage anxiety and depression symptoms. Second, the DSM-5 application grants healthcare providers various diagnostic criteria for mental health conditions. Other mental health applications include the NICE guidance and brain tutor 3-D applications The SAMHSA Suicide Safe Application Discussion.
