The Reflective Journal Assignment Paper
The Reflective Journal Assignment Paper
Students are required to maintain weekly reflective narratives throughout the course to combine into one course-long reflective journal that integrates leadership and inquiry into current practice as it applies to the Professional Capstone and Practicum course.
In your journal, you will reflect on the personal knowledge and skills gained throughout this course. The journal should address a variable combination of the following, depending on your specific practice immersion clinical experiences: The Reflective Journal Assignment Paper

In my practicum course, I have acquired knowledge and skills surrounding different areas that impact nursing practice. The topics covered through the course included the role of technology in enhancing patient care, ethical concerns, the impact of interprofessional collaboration in improving patient care, and health disparities, among others. The purpose of this paper is to reflect on the skills and knowledge gained around different topics that may impact my professional practice The Reflective Journal Assignment Paper.
New Practice Approaches
Throughout the practicum, I have identified that various process and improvement methodologies have been continuously proposed over the years to achieve optimal healthcare outcomes. Clinical interventions are based on evidence-based practices that help improve healthcare outcomes while reducing healthcare costs. While working in the diabetes department unit, I gained knowledge and skills on how to conduct structured patient education on diabetes that helps prevent and manage diabetes complications. Additionally, I also worked in the emergency department, where I gained adequate skills that ensured patient safety and quality care. For example, I gained knowledge on the critical role of maintaining hand hygiene during care to prevent hospital-acquired infections. I regularly cleaned my hands with an alcohol gel before and after attending to every patient, which helped promote safe and quality healthcare services.
Interprofessional Collaboration and Communication
During my practicum, I worked in different areas, including the emergency and operating room departments, where I found myself most times. Both departments consisted of different interprofessional who worked closely to ensure the delivery of safe and quality care (Morgan et al., 2020)The Reflective Journal Assignment Paper. The different interprofessional whom I interacted with included nurses, physicians, pharmacists, doctors, and social workers. I observed that all team members collaborated effectively, whereby they would even share their knowledge and skill. Additionally, I observed that effective communication was a key factor contributing to a successful collaboration. To promote open communication, I suggested that the teams have morning briefings to ensure all members know what is required from each of them, thus encouraging collaboration.
Patient Care Technology and Information Management Systems
Throughout the course, I have also identified that patient care technologies and information management systems have become an integral element in enhancing patient outcomes and workflow efficiency. This is achieved by reducing medication error by implementing various technologies like barcode medication administration systems. Additionally, I have learned that patient information is essential in implementing treatment plans, so patient data management is necessary (Alotaibi & Federico, 2017). I have learned the role of electronic health records in maintaining patient information. During my course learning, I realized I had an issuer operating the EHRs in the emergency department. I took the initiative to attend the weekly training on utilizing the systems.
Ethical Considerations in Health Care
Throughout the course, I learned various ethical considerations that ensure preserving the integrity and human dignity during patient care. It is essential that during practice, I observe the principle of autonomy, justice, beneficence, and non-maleficence (Kemparaj & Kadalur, 2018)The Reflective Journal Assignment Paper. Following such directions will ensure I adequately address various ethical dilemmas I might face during practice. For example, I encountered a moral dilemma where a patient declined the treatment plan recommended because of their religious beliefs. Thus, I had to explore other treatment options acceptable to the patient.
Culturally Sensitive Care
In my course, I engaged in various campaign programs that trained on the concept of culturally sensitive care. I also learned that I would engage and interact with diverse patient populations in my profession. As such, patients will have different social and cultural backgrounds (Claeys et al., 2020). To promote patient-centered care, I must ensure I provide culturally sensitive care. This includes awareness of different beliefs, values, norms, and cultural practices surrounding diverse populations.
