Week 8: Psychotherapy for Addictive Disorders
A long-standing debate has roiled over whether addicts have a choice over their behaviors. The disease creates distortions in thinking, feelings, and perceptions, which drive people to behave in ways that are not understandable to others around them. Simply put, addiction is not a choice. Addictive behaviors are a manifestation of the disease, not a cause

A common misconception is that addiction is a choice, and addicts are often labeled as individuals who lack morals, willpower, or responsibility. However, addiction is a clinical disorder that must be treated with the support of a health care professional. Although many people who are exposed to potentially addictive substances and behaviors continue life unaltered by their experiences, some people are fueled by these experiences and spiral out of control. In your role as the psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner, you must be prepared to not only work with these individuals who struggle with addiction but also help them and their families overcome the social stigmas associated with addictive behavior.

This week, you will assess a research article on psychotherapy for clients with addictive disorders. You also examine therapies for treating these clients and consider potential outcomes. Finally, you will discuss how therapy treatment will translate into your clinical practice.

Assignment: Psychotherapy for Clients With Addictive Disorders
Addictive disorders can be particularly challenging for clients. Not only do these disorders typically interfere with a client’s ability to function in daily life, but they also often manifest as negative and sometimes criminal behaviors. Sometime clients with addictive disorders also suffer from other mental health issues, creating even greater struggles for them to overcome. In your role, you have the opportunity to help clients address their addictions and improve outcomes for both the clients and their families The Psychotherapy For Addictive Disorders Assignment.

To prepare:

Review this week’s Learning Resources and consider the insights they provide about diagnosing and treating addictive disorders. As you watch the 187 Models of Treatment for Addiction video, consider what treatment model you may use the most with clients presenting with addiction.
Search the Walden Library databases and choose a research article that discusses a therapeutic approach for treating clients, families, or groups with addictive disorders.

Addictive disorders negatively impact individuals’ lives. They interfere with the ability to function optimally, cause mental health issues, and manifest negative behaviors. Addressing addictions is essential in improving the health and outcomes of clients. The selected article, “A single-case quasi-experimental design of Functional Analytic Psychotherapy for substance abuse,” focuses on evaluating the effectiveness of Functional Analytic Psychotherapy (FAP) on clinically relevant behaviors in the context of substance abuse and chemical dependence. It also focuses on identifying the therapeutic components of change (Aranha et al., 2020)The Psychotherapy For Addictive Disorders Assignment. The article asserts that FAP is essential in altering clinically relevant behaviors by positively reinforcing clients’ progress during and after sessions, as well as leading to improvement in their lives.

The study focused on two patients who had substance use disorder (SUD). The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) (2021) states that SUD is a mental disorder that affects an individual’s thinking and behavior, rendering them unable to control their use of substances such as alcohol, illegal drugs, or medications. Symptoms in patients range from moderate to severe, with addiction being the severest form of SUD. Behavioral therapies are an essential component in treating patients with SUD. The participants of the study, Rafael and Lucas, sought out therapy for alcoholism and cocaine/crack use, respectively. The participants recognized being negatively affected by substance abuse, making them have feelings of depression and anxiety.

Functional analytic psychotherapy (FAP) emphasizes creating safe, authentic, evocative, and mutually vulnerable therapeutic relationships to offer strategies to patients with different psychological problems. A comprehensive review of research on FAP revealed that FAP is promising in addressing psychiatric disorders. Furthermore, using FAP techniques and as a mechanism of social reinforcer by therapists in addressing behavioral problems, particularly in the realm of social functioning, leads to positive changes in their behaviors (Kanter et al., 2017)The Psychotherapy For Addictive Disorders Assignment. In the selected article, the researchers incorporated FAP to reinforce and evoke clinically relevant behaviors during the sessions with the participants.

In their final remarks, Aranha et al. (2020) assert that incorporating functional, analytical psychotherapy leads to better outcomes. Moreover, previous studies had demonstrated that FAP in patients with substance use disorder resulted in improved behavioral repertoire and drug use. Nevertheless, those studies did not point out specifically the individual effects and mechanisms of change from focused analytical psychotherapy. The current quasi-experiment design ensured that the researchers assessed the impacts of functional analytical psychotherapy and identified behavioral changes in both participants. The results demonstrated that the first participant, who had a longer period of the intervention, savored better outcomes from the therapy. The results underscore the essentiality and effectiveness of FAP on patients struggling with substance use disorder.

The results demonstrated that introducing focused analytic psychotherapy reduced the use of substances for both clients after three months (Aranha et al., 2020)The Psychotherapy For Addictive Disorders Assignment. More specifically, FAP was introduced to respond to the progress of the participants contingently. Furthermore, the researchers demonstrated that the research participant who had more time in the psychotherapy sessions had greater benefits when followed up. Additionally, the participant had more reduction in usage of drugs. The findings or outcomes helped the researchers conclude that FAP alters clinically relevant behaviors through positive reinforcement of the progress in the therapy sessions. Furthermore, FAP improves the outcomes out-of-session.

After following the article keenly, I will use the study’s outcomes in my practice. The study has offered deep insights into the effectiveness of FAP in reducing drug use among patients struggling with addiction. More specifically, I will utilize FAP in my therapy sessions with my clients to reinforce more effective personal behaviors and reduce social events aversiveness to reduce the likelihood of relapses. Furthermore, I will assist my clients in identifying effective problem-solving skills, promoting healthier lifestyles, and identifying factors that perpetuate drug abuse in the quest for culminating substance use disorders and the consequent addictions.

The researchers identify three main limitations to their work. First, the chosen method (quasi-experimental design) showed a correlation between the independent and dependent variables. However, the researchers cannot ascertain the type of relationship between the variables. The researchers propose a more powerful design (such as the reversion one). A more extensive training time would improve the internal validity of the study. Finally, the researchers suggest using more objective measures such as urine tests to evaluate changes in drug use. Nevertheless, the study provides valid conclusions, and its limitations do not hinder utilizing the findings to inform practice The Psychotherapy For Addictive Disorders Assignment
