The Policy Proposal Essay Paper

The guiding principle for nurses is the application of theories and lessons learned in class to practice. This is important because nursing is an evidence-based discipline. Coupled with the fact that nurses are entrusted with taking care of human beings, it is critical that they are aware of what is needed to alleviate the health conditions of these patients. The IOM policy for the full application of education and scope of practice is motivated by the desire to achieve two objectives. One is to guarantee that quality care standards are retained and that the nurses are comfortable in their new places of employment even with their limited work experience. Commenting on the benefits highlighted, communication and confidence are arguably the most important because of the intensity of work that healthcare organizations are accustomed to. Confidence enables the nurses to effectively apply what they have learned in class over the years. Communication is important as it enables nurses to learn and share with their peers, seniors and patients and in the process hasten their transition into the work environment (Poorchangizi et al, 2019). Smooth transitions are indeed necessary for practice and this is achieved by organizations setting up programs aimed at transitioning nurses into practice.

AANP has developed regulations that are aimed at standardizing practices and advocating for policies intended for improvement in practice (Rainbow & Steege, 2019). According to Kleinpell, Cook and Padden (2018), the AAPN acts on the behalf of nurses and organizations. This is arguably in recognition that the environment in classes and practice are different and nurse practitioners need to be constantly made aware of this. What’s more, having a scope of practice in place for nurses is important as it serves as the yardstick upon which organizations judge and gauge performance. The same standards set out in the scope of practice act as a guiding principle for newly recruited and existing nurses The Policy Proposal Essay Paper

RE: Group 2 Discussion – Week 7
COLLAPSE
Policy Proposal

My selected policy for the Institute of Medicine (IOM) states that nurses should work to their full level of education and scope of practice should not be limited. Advanced practice nurses have completed numerous years of education along with clinical experience. Access to care for patients has been increasingly challenging with obstacles related to the pandemic while the need for provider access continues to rise with notable shortages. Allowing nurses to work to their full potential benefits healthcare settings in utilizing all appropriate resources.

Following policy analysis, I believe the IOM got it right. Advocating for nurses to practice at their highest level can assist in building employee confidence and satisfaction. According to the Institute of medicine (2010) there was a notable growth in turnover rate for nurses needing to transform their role to adjust within their practice setting. The IOM recommendations made in providing health care to various populations by utilizing healthcare providers to their full potential. The Policy Proposal Essay Paper

Professional Organizations dealing with the issue

The America Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) provides a general overview of nurse practitioner scope of practice as discussed in “Discussion Paper: Scope of Practice for Nurse Practitioners. Additionally, the AANP defines nurse practitioners as licensed independent practitioners who provide care in a variety of clinic settings (Gonzalez & Gigli, 2021). In 2008 a workgroup, convened by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing, developed a unified, standardized, comprehensive vision for APRN regulation known as The Concesus Model (Gonzalez & Gigli, 2021). This professional organization made significant strides in defining scope of practice with certification and licensure. Nurses are valued members of the healthcare team. Allowing nurses to practice to the highest level of their scope fills gaps in our healthcare system shortage. Lastly, state representatives can advocate for nurses to practice at the highest level possible. Nurses provide unique contributions to healthcare and should be allowed to practice to the highest level of their scope without restrictions from state or organizational protocols.
