The United States foreign policy during the 1930s helped to promote World War II. This is evidenced from two major events: Treaty of Versailles, and failure of League of Nations. Following the end of World War I and in the face of the high cost of the war that included more than $200 billion spent and over 40 million killed, the global political arena ushered in a new era of effective, hypocritical, populist and strident politics (Keiran & Martini, 2018)The Outbreak Of World War II Discussion Paper. President Woodrow Wilson understood that such a global war was too costly. As such, he made a tour of Europe to drum up support for a League of Nations that would pool the militaries of great global powers to strike down would-be aggressors. President Wilson was assured of a measure of support from France and Britain. However, he had overlooked the fact that the USA being a signatory of the League of Nations would require Senate approval, something that was ominously difficult as he had not included Republicans in his peace making delegation to Europe. Although the Republications had only a two-seat majority in parliament, they ultimately led the Senate in rejecting the Treaty of Versailles and ensuring that the USA did not join the League of Nations. With the USA not ratifying the Treaty of Versailles and not joining the League of Nations, it exhibited an isolation foreign policy characterized by blasé indifference to the regimes abroad. This meant that the growing tensions between Triple Entente (England, France and Russia) and Triple Alliance (Italy, Austria-Hungary and Germany) continued, resulting in World War II erupting (Kamensky et al., 2019). The USA did not get involved in the World War II until two years after the war had erupted, and they only got involved because Japan had bombed Pearl Harbor and Germany had foolishly declared war on the USA. As it was, had USA signed the Treaty of Versailles and joined the League of Nations, then they could have acted as a deterrent power to Germany and leveraged their strong military power in supporting their allies and preventing the war (Lantis & Homan, 2022)The Outbreak Of World War II Discussion Paper.
