Nurses and nursing students are called upon to continuously study as nursing practice is constantly changing. As a college nurse student, there are a variety of options available for me in the job market but in the context of this report, I discuss four of these options. The first option for me is to become a nurse midwife. According to Mohammed and El-Sol (2020), a nurse midwife participates in care provision for pregnant mothers before, during, and after giving birth. The specific clinical roles I would be involved in are conducting gynecological exams, delivering prenatal and postnatal care to the mothers, and offering directions on family planning and nursing. The second option is working as a case manager. Mohammed and El-Sol (2020) described that the role of the case manager is to monitor the progress of patients after treatment. Once the physicians offer treatment to patients, the care manager takes over where they take the assignment of monitoring how patients are responding to treatment and in the process suggesting alternative treatments with the aim of achieving successful patient outcomes The Importance of Nursing Education Paper.

The third option available for me as a nursing graduate is a nurse practitioner.  A nurse practitioner is tasked with the provision of primary or specialty care. What this means is that I would work in collaboration with physicians to ensure that the directions on the treatment given are followed up and adhered to. A notable benefit for nurse practitioners is that they are allowed to run and maintain healthcare clinics. The fourth and perhaps most important option for me as a nursing graduate is to become a nurse informaticist. According to Mohammed and El-Sol (2020), nurse informaticists work with data collected from patients where they conduct analysis and forward reports and data to doctors, fellow nurses, and patients. The shared data is relied upon for medical care decisions and requires one to be at the least IT savvy because computer programs are used in this.

Among the many recommendations made by the IOM is the need for nurses to continuously seek education opportunities recognizing the dynamic nature of the nursing practice. Roney, J., Long, J., Garcia, E. C., & Mendelson, S. (2022) have stated that it helps a lot for the education system in a country to be well equipped and capable of providing the right type of education for nursing students. In view of this, academic institutions should be able to provide seamless opportunities for learning that incorporates the most recent research and information in healthcare and nursing. An important comment made by Roney, Long, Garcia, and Mendelson (2022) is that nurses should be partners and collaborators with physicians in clinical practice. The justification for this is that the development of healthcare requires all practitioners to have an understanding of the importance of healthcare treatment processes. When, for instance, a doctor treats a patient using a particular intervention method, it helps the nurse to be aware of the treatment method used so that they can determine the most effective care method for patients. Going forward, I would want to pursue a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree. The rationale for pursuing a DNP is that I would have the opportunity to take up leadership roles in a healthcare organization. What this implies is that as a DNP, I would be able to play a central role in improving patient care and an overall positive patient health outcome. Mention must be made of how education in nursing enables practitioners to recognize and appreciate complementary roles and skills of different professionals within and outside of the nursing profession. All the interprofessional practitioners are crucial in alleviating the health outcomes of patients The Importance of Nursing Education Paper.

The call by the IOM for nurses to further their current studies in nursing is influenced by the fact that the demand and need for healthcare in the United States is ever increasing, and that through education new skills are acquired. Namyssova et al. (2019) have drawn a parallel between higher education and competitiveness and this is what motivates me to pursue advanced degrees in nursing with my ultimate aim being a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree. Nursing practice is arguably the most hands clinical practice in healthcare and the fact that a lot of research is leading to changes in the way work is done, regular upgrading of skills and knowledge is crucial. I desire to imbue competitiveness in my clinical practice and continuous learning is a guaranteed way of accruing this in me. I also acknowledge that through education I will get opportunities to practice in new positions and capacities such as leadership. Namyssova et al. (2019) state that as nurses advance their education in nursing, a multitude of professional avenues opens up for them. Closely related to this is the fact that as more nurses get more learned through advanced degrees, the risk of negative patient outcomes such as patient deaths decreases. In view of this, increasing my level of education will be beneficial for the healthcare organization I work with and for the patients, I serve in the long run.

Mentioned repeatedly in the scope of ANA is the need for nursing practice to be intended at providing quality care. In addition to this, healthcare organizations are called upon to be vigilant in their research and quest for bettering healthcare for patients. Following this, there is a positive correlation between continuing nursing education and competency and attitudes that nurses have. Through increased learning, the skills and knowledge of nurses are honed leading to improved competency and perceptions that nurses have about nursing practice and their roles in healthcare.  Mention must also be made on the issue of the code of ethics that registered nurse practitioners must adhere to. Through continuous learning in nursing, I will learn the importance and application of nursing moral practices and employ them in my clinical practice The Importance of Nursing Education Paper.

I hold the views and proposals of IOM and ANA closely and support the idea that nurses should be objective in their learning and practice. On whether continuing education should be made mandatory, I support the idea based on the fact that healthcare is a realm that is constantly changing and practitioners need to constantly be updated with new developments drawn from research. Suffice it to say, nursing practice is evidence-based and the application of new methods is made easier when the practitioners comprehend the knowledge and practice well it is through learning that this becomes possible.
