The Future of Nursing report by Institute of Medicine (IOM) critically explores the nursing education and the changes required for meeting the increasing healthcare demands (Glassman, 2020). For instance, there are over three million registered nurses in the United States which makes up the largest part of the healthcare workforce. An important issue that is forcing the reforms is the way through which additional 32 million people in the United States will be treated (Booth, 2021).  Nurses have a paramount role in patient care and they spend a huge time in their careers giving patients care in a professional manner. Thus, nurses depict valuable insights and have unique abilities in quality care and collaborate with other healthcare providers in delivering safety and quality care to patients as established in the Affordable Care Act (ACA)The Importance Of Nursing Education Discussion.

Options on the Nursing Jobs

Nurses are presented with a myriad of options in the job market. These are jobs that require different levels of expertise to implement in achieving the ultimate health outcomes. For instance, there is clinical care setting jobs where a nursing officer is required to executive nursing roles in clinical healthcare centers in managing inpatients and outpatients that presents with diverse health needs. Other healthcare settings where nurses can work includes in the pediatric department where nurses have a central role in caring for the children. In addition, there are other healthcare facilities where nurses are required to work in sub-departments in specialized care treatments. For instance, cancer care centers for either adults or children where a nurse is given the role of caring for adults or children suffering from cancerous tumors (Lera, 2020)The Importance Of Nursing Education Discussion. There are also departments for geriatrics where nurses can work in caring for elderly persons. In most cases, the geriatrics nurses work in nursing homes where the old people are managed.

To be the most suited for these many job markets a nursing officer has to be qualified and possess a basic nursing course. Some of these courses take as much as four years to complete. The courses give nurses a better understanding of their areas of expertise and improve in knowledge and expertise in selected fields. In my case, I am a qualified practical nurse with the ability and experience in administering injections, doing therapeutic massage, making patients ready for surgery, dressing wounds, administering intravenous drips, and keeping medical records. Importantly, as a practical nurse, I have the role of communicating with other medical personnel regarding patients with special needs.

IOM Future of Nursing Recommendations

The IOM 2010 report recognized the need for expanding the role of nurses by encouraging them to advance their professional training. According to the IOM report, education will make nurses to be better prepared to implement safely, equity and offer high-quality care (Glassman, 2020). The recommendation observed that nurses should be allowed to practice with regard to optimal; training and education. In addition, the report recommended that nurses should be allowed to possess higher levels of training and education through standardized systems of education that are able to promote quality academic progression. Additionally, it was recommended that nurses should become recognized partners with doctors and other healthcare providers in improving the quality of care in the United States. Finally, it was recommended that there is a need for better information infrastructure and data collection in enhancing an effective workforce for purpose of planning and making policies regarding healthcare standards (Glassman, 2020)The Importance Of Nursing Education Discussion.

The IOM task force came up with these recommendations by identifying the unique roles played by nurses throughout the healthcare system. This is because nurses have close and regular proximity to the patients hence they possess a thorough understanding of the care continuum of healthcare processes (Glassman, 2020). They also have a unique ability in working at hospitals, homes, and schools in improving and redesigning healthcare functions.

 Professional Certification

Throughout my career, I would like to advance my education with a master of science nursing (MSN). This academic achievement will enable me to become a state-licensed and certified advanced practice registered nurse (APRN).  As an APRN I will be able to accomplish the most critical aspects of patient care and clinical care which are part of my career goals. For instance, with MSN I will be able to effectively assess, examine, diagnose, treat, and also prescribe medicat5iosnand refer patients that present undifferentiated issues. I plan to attain this goal in nursing education within the next two yearsThe Importance Of Nursing Education Discussion.

Increasing Education and Competitiveness in the Job Market

Increasing my academic levels in nursing is a crucial way through which I am able to reduce competitiveness in the job market. This is because there are millions of registered nurses in the job market and it is only through improving my education levels that I am able to detach myself from the great competition in terms of job acquisition. Higher education enables me to diversify my nursing roles which is a preferred option by many employers. With an MSN I will be able to improve my abilities and also my value in the job market. I would take more of patients’ diagnosis and treatment roles as opposed to assistant or ward management which are the primary roles of most nurses (Lera, 2020). Also, with MSN I will be more qualified in management and leadership hence there is a possibility of working as a nurse leader in healthcare facilities to lead change. Additionally, with an MSN I will also be able to focus more on scientific research which is helpful in adding more knowledge to nursing practice and quality of care.

Relationship of continuing nursing education to competency, attitudes, knowledge, and the ANA Scope

There is a strong relationship between continuing nursing education with competency, attitudes, and knowledge. With better education, nurses are competent in making informed decisions in terms of patient care. Also, education help nurses improve their knowledge such that they can effectively handle different tasks and even more complicated cases (Booth, 2021)The Importance Of Nursing Education Discussion. Additionally, education helps the nurses to develop better attitudes that are ultimate in patient care.

Further, continuing education in using enables the nursing officer to offer services with respect to the code of ethics as enshrined in the ANA guidelines. This is because nurses are some of the healthcare workers that are faced with many ethical issues and ethical dilemmas that arise during patients’ care. With advanced education, nurses become more aware of ANA codes of conduct where they can effectively make better decisions regarding nursing practices.

Mandatory Nursing Education

Continuing nursing education should not be made mandatory. This is because such an attempt will make the achievement of higher education the main objective and not the quality patient or clinical care. The nurses should however be encouraged to achieve higher education for purpose of developing better competencies in their jobs and also in specializing in certain areas of interest.

Nursing education is an emerging positive transformation in the health sector that is enhancing the roles of nurses and helping improve the quality of care. The nursing profession is emerging as a lucrative career with changes of advancement and which is a positive turning point in the profession. The IOM report of 2010 made recommendations regarding nursing education in an effort to make nurses more productive in offering quality care. Continuing education in a big way helps in improving competency, knowledge, and attitudes among nurses. Additionally, there is no need to make nursing education a mandatory thing but should be left to individual nurses to make choices about their future career goals and interests The Importance Of Nursing Education Discussion.
