During the course of my work, I once met a patient who had fallen ill, been admitted to the hospital, and been prescribed intravenous antibiotics. Once she was admitted to the clinic, I was able to start working with her. The patient’s family, however, was originally from a South American region known for its intense adherence to voodoo traditions. She blamed her relatives for the incident because of their alleged vengeful behavior after many arguments. During our conversation, I picked up on her feeling depressed, so I worked with her one-on-one, utilizing motivational interviewing and reflective listening to get her to keep taking the IV antibiotics. The cultural care theory informed my use of what Leininger terms the accommodation and negotiating strategy. However, I did not realize this when I was using the model The Cultural Care Theory Discussion Paper.
Applying one’s knowledge to a wide range of situations is a notable benefit of this theory for those working in the health care sector, particularly nursing. The ideas and connections offered are at a degree of abstraction, which permits them to be used in many different circumstances (McFarland, 2021). This promotes competence and consistency in care, both of which may have beneficial effects on healthcare systems worldwide. One of the most prevalent cultural challenges that occur for nurses includes religion and religious views (Wehbe-Alamah, 2018). Several religious communities, out of respect for their beliefs, decline life-saving interventions, including hospitalization, blood transfusions, and surgery. I believe the first step to judging the utility of the theory is first conveying the idea to patients. Leininger’s transcultural nursing assumption provides a doorway to investigating patients’ perspectives toward a certain health method (Wehbe-Alamah, 2018)The Cultural Care Theory Discussion Paper. This should then be followed by monitoring the health outcome and their change in viewpoint. If the health outcome is favorable and their view has somehow altered, this shows that theory is successful.
