Theories and Concepts in Leadership and Management

In 300 words, describe the difference in roles between leadership and management. Explain how the goals of management and leadership overlap and provide one example

While the terms leadership and management are often used interchangeably, they possess different skills and characteristics. First, leaders are visionaries. They envision the organization’s path and work towards reaching its goal through team building (Carrara et al., 2019). Comparatively, managers achieve the organization’s visions and goals by planning, organizing staffs, and implementing effective strategies and processes. Second, managers are organizers while leaders are aligners. Managers break down long term goals into segments and coordinate different activities to reach the desired outcome while leaders focus on aligning and influencing people to achieve the desired outcome (Carrara et al., 2019)The Concepts In Leadership And Management Assignment.

Third, leaders take risks while managers control risks. Leaders try new things, embrace failures, and acknowledge them as a path to success. Divergently, managers focus on minimizing risks by controlling and avoiding them (Poels et al., 2020). Lastly, leaders shape a company’s culture while managers endorse it. Passionate leaders empower and inspire employees to embrace and live a company’s culture while managers continuously support and endorse it through supervisions and giving directives.

Importantly, leadership and management goals overlap under different circumstances. Sometimes, managers are called upon to be leaders and vice versa, especially when overseeing a large team. Here, both leadership and management skills are required to optimally run the organization (Durmus & Kirca, 2019)The Concepts In Leadership And Management Assignment. For instance, when a company needs to achieve effective communication, a leader is required to inspire and empower employees towards achieving the goal while manager coordinates teams and systems to set a clear communication path.

As a nurse leader, describe how you can facilitate change by taking advantage of this overlap.

Within this context, I will take advantage of the overlap by fostering a team culture and assigning each team member different responsibilities, hence, boosting self-esteem and improving co-ordination and communication.

In 300 words, compare two leadership theories. Provide an overview of each and discuss the strengths and weakness in relation to nursing practice.

There are countless leadership theories in nursing with the most common ones being transformational and transactional leadership. Transformational leadership theory focuses on inspiring and influencing a team to accomplish a goal. It was developed by James McGregor in the 1970s. According to (Collins et al., 2020), transformational leaders expect their staff to perform more than average. Unlike transformational leadership, transactional leadership embodies a behavior where milestones are reached through rewards and sanctions. They maintain a company’s value and culture through conditional rewards and exceptions (Carrara et al., 2019)The Concepts In Leadership And Management Assignment.

Both transformational and transactional leadership theories have strengths and weaknesses. Considering the strengths, transformational leadership breeds loyalty and respect. In healthcare setting, transformational leaders inspire nurses to work while motivated and follow instructions promptly to promote quality care (Durmus & Kirca, 2019). Equally, transformational leaders drive change and improve employees’ morale. As a nurse, having the ability to conceptualize a plan and implement it with a caring attitude drives change and promotes teamwork and holistic care (Poels et al., 2020)The Concepts In Leadership And Management Assignment.

Regarding the weaknesses, transformational leaders rarely reprimand or lay off practitioners because of the close relationships they have established. They can also be powerful opponents of a policy they don’t agree with and will likely cause friction when healthcare practitioners become loyal to them than the organization (Poels et al., 2020).

Consequently, transactional leaders create goals that are achievable for everyone and motivate healthcare practitioners to achieve them through rewards and punishments. Although the transactional leadership style can result to high employee turnover, it is crucial in emergency units where nurses are expected to strictly adhere to the rules and save a patient’s life (Durmus & Kirca, 2019)The Concepts In Leadership And Management Assignment. Major weaknesses of transactional leadership are lack of team building, creativity, and low staff morale.

As a hiring manager for your unit, describe three components that you would look for in a resume that could tell you the most important characteristics of a candidate. What would you look for in the applicant’s social media?

As a hiring manager, I will review a candidate’s personal qualities, job experience, and special skills before hiring him. This is because the three components will highlight the candidate’s mind-set and shade light on his strengths and weaknesses. Also, I will look for a candidate’s profile, posts, comments, and likes in social media to discover if the education background and experiences listed there matches the resume and also identify his true character.
