Technology Impacts On Healthcare Discussion

Discussion Response – Nazmi

It appears that you have focused on technology’s impacts on healthcare. The mention of informatics and EHR in healthcare points toward a trend that emerged in the past decade or so and has in many ways transformed the way healthcare organizations operate, particularly how nurse practitioners go about their day-to-day tasks (Chau et al., 2019)Technology Impacts On Healthcare Discussion. In agreement with your statement that technology is dynamic and invites both positive and negative impacts, it is worthwhile to mention that users of technologies such as informatics must be constantly trained. This sometimes places a financial burden on the organization and nurse. An issue that you would have perhaps delved further into is the increased pressure healthcare technology places on nurses and the organization. On the one hand, healthcare is forced to keep on replacing its equipment to keep pace with the latest technologies (Chandy, 2019). On the other hand, nurses are compelled to work on their competencies to match these changes frequently. This is sometimes too overwhelming and leads to stress and demotivation.

As more technologies in healthcare emerge, their ease of use will likely increase. While computers still dominate the technology and digitization that the healthcare system relies on, support innovations such as cloud computing and the use of platforms, as experienced in your case, have made these technologies less cumbersome and more effective. Although some of the technologies being used in healthcare today have some challenges, the overall impact they have had is improved patient outcomes helping realize the core objectives of the providers. An area that could be focused on more is big data analytics which helps healthcare organizations leverage loads of patient data help to improve health outcomes further Technology Impacts On Healthcare Discussion.

Technology is an ever-growing and ever-changing concept, regardless of its application. Just like in any other field it’s been applied, technology in healthcare has evolved throughout the years. Advancement in charting has been a huge trend throughout hospitals. Electronic Health Records are a big impact on the healthcare field for not just nurses but other medical professionals as well. An EHR in electronic digital version patient documents that contain medical history, medication, treatment plans, lab tests and results, allergies and diagnosis. (HealthIT.gov, 2018). Charting used to be done with pen and paper and took, now It is done on electronically (Walden, 2018). The Informatics Tools & Technologiesvideo states “as technology continues to evolve, additional information technology tools emerge” (Walden, 2018). The challenging factor within this trend is the constant new training required for older nurses that have to adapt to change at a rapid pace. Knowledge of the latest EHR is considered nursing competency at an entry level now (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2022)Technology Impacts On Healthcare Discussion. However, because of the constant change, there is room for new error and discouragement for nurses that are used to an old method who simply cannot adapt to change at such an intense pace.

Benefits & Promising Technology

A research article states “it is important for health care professionals to have the knowledge and skills to evaluate and recommend appropriate digital tools.” (Skiba, 2017). As technology advances, it is our job as nurses to advance with it. At one of my jobs in a hospital floor as a nurse, we used computers on wheels (COWS), to scan medication and the patient for patient verification prior to med administration. It was such a hassle to carry an entire computer station room to room, it was impractical and very time consuming. After I transitioned to a different hospital, the charting system we used was slightly different and one of the technological advancements I very much enjoyed was that everything was done by smart phone that was linked to the charting software on the computers. Instead of carrying an entire computer station room to room, we just had a smart phone with a scanner that we used for medication verification which would upload the data onto the computer station via an application. It was a more efficient and faster approach to get to patients on a timely manner Technology Impacts On Healthcare Discussion.

Patient Outcomes, Efficiency & Data Management

If all hospitals switched to smart phones with scanners to do their patient verification during med pass, the nurses would save time and be more efficient due to not having to push around an entire computer station. The data wound be managed the same as far as accuracy goes due to the information uploading via an app onto the software that links the computer and smart phone.
