Description
The clinical event that I encountered was during one of the Saturday tea breaks when serving other patients in the ward. I was giving them normal medication and evaluating their progress while others were being discharged. A few of the patients who I had served were moving out to bask and catch some warmth directly from the sun. About three patients were left in the room and I was leaving. Suddenly I heard some shouting from outside and the patients seemed preoccupied in looking for something along the fence. I went and began asking them what was the issue and was informed that one of the patients was bitten by a snake that escaped in the green fence. The others were tightly holding his hand that was bitten at the wrist. Others moved to their specific wards and were observing the event from the windows. Feelings
This experience was a unique one for me during my practice. I had never seen such a thing and I first felt scared of the event. I was determined to have first aid by swiftly bringing a bandage and calling my workmate to help address the issue. The situation and the occurrence were a traumatizing event to some patients as they all looked up to me to help their colleague with his problem. He was as well tensed and was breathing heavily. I realized that other patients and even care workers felt scared of the event as many had never seen a snake-bitten patient. They were all afraid that the patient would die and most-watched from a distance.
Evaluation
Though the event was traumatizing to others and even to most of us as nurses it was a learning experience. It was, however, a negative thing to see others run and just watch helplessly as one of their own is suffering. Everything went well because after I arrived I showed them the right way of addressing a snake bite case and the patient was taken for an anti-venom injection. Though there were some effects of the venom on the patient the issue was addressed swiftly and managed well.
Conclusion
The situation could have been a more positive experience for everyone if they were all around and watched the way first aid is undertaken. When faced with a similar situation I would have ensured the patient is first tied with any cloth below and after the bite even before rushing to look for a bandage. I learned that a snake bite is dangerous and require the swiftest first aid action and clinical care.
Action
The experiences were crucial in my nursing practice and I was challenged to enhance first aid training for other staff and even for patients (Tednes, 2022). I informed them about the environment such that when basking or walking around lawns it is important to be observant of any movement of insects and snakes that are venomous (Hamza, 2021)Reflective Paper On Nursing Education Assignment. Reflective writing is a tool utilized in nursing education to help you process a clinical event through critical thinking and recognize how you can grow from your thoughts on the event. The overall goal is for you to: 1) grow in your role as a future nurse by reflection and 2.) to assist you in developing skill in writing a document by mastering flow, grammar, content, references. You may use the questions in each stage below as a guide – you will not need to answer all the questions if you were able to document your reflection utilizing critical thinking and in a comprehensible way and were able to meet the criteria in the grading scale.
