Professional nursing practice has advanced over the years to the level that it is now. At present, nursing practice is not a haphazard occupation but one that is governed by evidence that has been proven beyond any reasonable doubt. This is what is referred to as evidence-based practice or EBP (Crabtree et al., 2016; Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2019)Reflection On Nursing Practice And Barriers To EBP Essay Discussion. EBP for nurses ensures interventions employed are safe, effective, and produce results. However, there are still barriers to EBP implementation at the individual and organizational level.

One particular barrier that has hindered nurses from correctly and successfully implementing EBP over the years is the lack of sufficient resources. This is an unfortunate state of affairs since organizations have to balance between care quality and profitability. Even though healthcare organizations put the patient’s interests first, they still have to be run profitably like businesses if they are to literally remain in business. Unfortunately, most executives take this a little bit too seriously that they deny EBP causes the required resources to effectively implement them. The only effective strategy that I can think of to solve this problem is that of keeping the executives in the know from beginning to end. Just ambushing them with a budget and a hurried presentation will not work and the problem will continue. Rather, keeping them in the know with short policy briefs at each step of the EBP way is the solution. This means from clinical inquiry, problem identification, PICOT formation and data search, recommendations, and finally dissemination.

Over the past eight weeks, my thinking about nursing research and EBP has changed in a very positive way. Right now I have become more aware of the importance of clinical inquiry and nursing research to the growth and maintenance of EBP. For instance, during the course an important thing I have learnt is that nursing research must not only produce statistically significant results; but the results must also be clinically significant.
