| Purpose of the Study | The aim of the study presented in Leng et al. (2020) was to examine the current state and influencing factors of nurses’ resilience and perceived job-related stressors, and identify strategies to promote resilience. It concedes that resilience is a learned skill and characteristic that serves an important function in improving the nurses’ capacity to manage and cope with work-related stress. | Type of Research & the Design | The research adopted a cross-sectional survey design. This design support the study as it engaged nurses in collecting information concerning the current state of clinical nurses resilience, and the influencing factors. Engaging nurses and collecting information from them offers a true understanding of resilience levels among them. |
| Sample | The study recruited a sample of nurses from a university-affiliated hospital located on the east coast of China. The hospital had a capacity of 5,000 beds and employed 3,392 full time nurses. The inclusion criteria was nurses who were employed on contract or permanent basis, and provided direct patient care. | Data Collection | Two platforms were used to collect data for the study: WeChat and Questionnaire StarTM. WeChat is a multipurpose messaging and social media platform. Questionnaire StarTM is a professional online questionnaire platform. The two data collection methods collected information on demographics, psychological resilience, and nurse-perceived stressors. |
| Data Analysis | Data analysis was performed using IBM SPSS version 25 statistical software. The analysis was for descriptive statistical analysis, t/F test, one-way analysis of variance, and multiple linear regression analysis. The analysis considered p value less than 0.05 as being statistically significant. |
| Limitations | A significant limitation was that the data collection method did not collect the required information. It was noted that when asked about strategies for releasing job-related stressors, the participating nurses shifted focus away from the study and assigned new meanings. |
| Findings/Discussion | The study results revealed that nurses resilience is significantly correlated with age, years of employment, clinical rank and education. The main job-related stressors were identified as frequent inspections and examinations, heavy workload, mandatory overtime, and low wages. The study reported low resilience scores among nurses in China (61.35 ± 13.12).
