Give a brief summary of your thoughts about a psychiatric mental health initial assessment.

A psychiatric mental health initial assessment is a procedure where a psychiatrist interviews and asks a patient questions to evaluate his cognitive functioning and abilities in a specific area. While undertaking the procedure, the first step involves forming a therapeutic alliance. Here, the psychiatrist is expected to be understanding, empathetic, trustworthy and friendly, a good listener, and a connector. The next steps involve taking a patient’s history and conducting a mental examination and formulation analysis.

Why is this critical to the care of the mental health patient?

Conducting a psychiatric initial mental health assessment provides an overview of the patient’s feelings, thoughts, and emotions, thus, promoting understanding between the patient and the psychiatrist. During the psychiatric initial mental health assessment, the psychiatrist interviews the patient and poses questions that prompt him to narrate his issues freely, thus, providing an overview of his emotions, perception and promoting holistic and patient centered care (Thagard & Larocque, 2018).
