After my internship program, I was privileged to work in a mental health nursing home. During this period, I discovered that several gaps still exist in the provision of care to mentally ill patients, coupled with the stigma that comes with mental illness. As I result, I did some research on mental health to gain more knowledge so that I could be able to better care for these patients. I consulted with several psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners, discussing a wide range of issues ranging from their experience in the field and what they felt needed to be done to improve quality care for patients with mental health problems. I have had no difficulty in deciding to focus on psychiatric mental health as my program of specialty so far. However, before I made my choice, I was in a state of a dilemma because I was looking at a wide range of opportunities and nursing specialties to choose from. Joining a psychiatric nursing home helped me make my final decision.

Mental health is a stigmatized illness. There is public stigma, self-stigma, and institutional stigma involving government and private organizational policies (Srivastava et al., 2018). These policies provide some level of opportunity limitations to people with mental illness. These trends reinforce negative beliefs and myths about people suffering from mental illness (American Psychiatric Association, 2022)Program for Psychiatric Health Nurse Practitioners Discussion. As a result, people are less likely to report mental illness in comparison to other health issues (Bharadwaj, et al., 2017). I, therefore, decided to specialize in this profession so that I could change the narrative and push for the rights of my patients.

The American Psychiatric Nurses Association (APNA) is one of the professional organizations in the psychiatric nursing profession that promotes wellness, prevents complications of mental illness, and provides care and support for those with mental health problems (APNA, 2022). Registration as a member requires one to open an account with their full name, address, and details of licensing. Interestingly, the registration fee is offered differently with different payment options for student nurses, those who are retired, nurses residing in the United States, and international nurses. Payment can be done monthly or yearly.
