Patient portals are electronic tools through which patients can access their medical records, appointment schedules, test results, and prescription details at any time (Tapuria et al., 2021). The implementation of this system has significantly improved community health with enhanced health literacy, providing individuals with an opportunity to participate actively in the management of their care, monitoring of chronic diseases, follow-ups, and decision-making. Patient portals have the unique value of helping bridge the gap in the patient-physician relationship. Its main capabilities include allowing patients to ask questions, describe symptoms, and receive instructions without subsequent personal encounters (Dendere et al., 2019)Privacy And Security Essay Discussion. This could help to minimize unnecessary appointments and reduce bills for health services as well as make sure that patients get important advice or treatments on time. Patient portals also result in enhanced health literacy among patients. They enable patients to comprehensively learn about their medical history, provide access to the available educational materials related to their illnesses, and provide personalized health recommendations.

There is a close relationship between patient portals and one of the most important pieces of legislation in the United States, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Based on HIPAA regulations, patient information that is accessed through these portals cannot be compromised because they have put measures to ensure that such information is encrypted and only accessed by people with the right password or identification number (Edemekong et al., 2022)Privacy And Security Essay Discussion. The shared information is usually end-to-end encrypted, preventing possible data leaks, protecting patients’ personal health information, and enhancing trust levels. This holistic approach results in a healthier, more informed, and engaged patient population, ready to actively engage in their health promotion.

The class will be split into two groups:

Group One, will defend the use of the patient portal and how it improves overall health of the community. Group 2 will defend why the use of the patient portal can be detrimental to community health.

The group promoting the patient portal will also promote the use of HIPAA. The group against the patient portal will also say why HIPAA can be problematic.  Consider the need for health literacy in your response and how health literacy is linked to patient portal use.

I am in group 1. The one in bold are the ones that apply to me.
