With patients with mental illness, medication non-compliance is ever increasing. Therefore, it is not a factor that I observed in my health institution alone; it is affecting the whole state’s health system. For this reason, I would want the issue of “medical non-compliance and misuse of control medication in mental health practice†to be included in this year’s organization’s systematic agenda in order to cub and find a solution to this problem soonest. Depending on their specific illness, people with mental illness have different adherences to psychotropic medications, with those with generalized anxiety disorders having the most adherences at more than 50%. The other mental health patients usually have up to more than 70% non-adherence (Jenkins, 2013). These patients include those suffering from major depressive disorder, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder, which are relatively more severe t generalized anxiety disorder. While it has been proven that non-compliance with a specified treatment by a severe mental illness patient, more often than not, leads to relapsing, hospitalization, or even death in worst cases (Magura et al., 2013)Prescribing Mental Health Medication Essay. Most patients are missing their prescriptions, and the only explanation they have is that they are feeling better.
Furthermore, control medications are medications that, although they have health benefits, can easily be used for recreational activities, which often lead to their abuse and, consequently, addiction (Doran, 2021). Since these medications are highly effective in inducing sleep, relaxation, and reducing panic and seizures, which are but some of the symptoms of many if not all health patients, many practitioners tend to over-use them to manage these extreme behaviors (Doran, 2021), which in the long run ends up making the patients addicted. Moreover, many patients nowadays are often prescribed these control drugs without being properly and thoroughly evaluated. This leads to the growing amount of public abuse and addiction cases among adolescents and the general youth.
What Strategies Would you Use to Inform Stakeholders and Persuade them of the Importance of your Identified Clinical Practice Issue?Prescribing Mental Health Medication Essay
Depending on the specification of a particular health center, there are many groups of stakeholders associated with a policy’s process. In this agenda-setting, I shall address the most important stakeholders: the patients, the healthcare providers, the payers, and those involved in policy-making. Other stakeholders commonly associated are the insurance companies, the firm, and the government in general. One strategy I will use is invoking empathy on the stakeholders (Hyder et al., 2010)Prescribing Mental Health Medication Essay. Many patients have seen the effects of being non-compliant and, more so, the effects of using control medications. Medical practitioners have to deal with the cases, and these effects are seen by the payers, the general public, and the government. Showing the detrimental effects of this practice and the using growing numbers formed by recent statistics, the stakeholders will be compelled to act on the issue to improve the general health experience.
However, I will lay down the premises in which each stakeholder can reach and clearly state the actions they can take to remedy this problem. This will make the stakeholders know that there is something they can do to remedy the situation. By reminding medical practitioners that they have the power to perform extensive tests and keep tabs on the patients (Jenkins, 2013), the government that they have the power to regulate the amount of control drugs in hospitals, and policymakers that they can come up with a lasting policy, they will be motivated to do their roles, which only they can do in order to move this issue forward (Hyder et al., 2010)Prescribing Mental Health Medication Essay.

Discussion Response
I agree that most patients, especially those with mental disorders, fail to adhere to the prescription requirements. However, most of these patients fail to take their medications due to forgetfulness or cultural beliefs. According to Narayanan et al. (2020), forgetfulness has been the major reason, especially when the patients live alone and have no one to follow up on their medicine intake. As a result, such non-adherence to medication may lead to more adverse effects on the prior patients. For instance, when a patient with bipolar disorder fails to adhere to medication intake, they may become unproductive and develop severe suicidal thoughts. Hence, if a community has approximately fifty cases of bipolar disorder, there is a high likelihood of such community having high mortality rates. The issue of cultural beliefs has had many mental health disorders, including patients failing to take medication (Marasine & Sankhi, 2021)Prescribing Mental Health Medication Essay. That is because most societal members are inclined toward religion and traditional ways of life and believe that any illness arises from evil spirits. As a result, most people with such beliefs become hard to convince of the effectiveness of scientific ways of healing various illnesses.
Therefore, it is up to the healthcare providers to assess various interventions to increase patients’ medication adherence. One way can be by incorporating cultural and medical interventions where the healthcare organizations can involve religious leaders in the treatment plan. Such an approach will be more effective for patients who believe their condition results from the evil world (Alasmee, 2020). For patients with forgetfulness, the healthcare providers can liaise with their close member of families or trusted friends to help carry out follow-up activities. Therefore, involving all stakeholders is relevant when carrying out any healthcare intervention or implementation, especially the community, to help them understand why the intervention is important and how they will benefit from it.
