Political competence requires skills, values, and perspectives to engage in political participation (Cervera-Gasch et al., 2022). It could be defined as the ability of a leader to effectively engage with politicians and other stakeholders to achieve desired outcomes. Also, political competence is the ability to navigate the political landscape to achieve desired outcomes. A nurse leader demonstrating political competence would be able to identify the key stakeholders in a given issue, understand their interests and motivations, and craft a strategy for engaging them that leads to a positive result for the organization. For example, a nurse leader may devise a strategy that meets everyone’s needs. To improve patient safety at their hospital, the nurse leader might identify local strong city councilor or who sits in political positions, the essential health players, committees, stakeholders, and how critical politics intersect with the policy. Nurse leaders must demonstrate political competence to engage with politicians and other stakeholders effectively.

One example of how a nurse leader could demonstrate political competence at the local, state, or national level would be by advocating for changes to health care legislation because they believe it will improve patient safety. According to Clarke et al. (2021), nurses influence policy-making through political competence that requires their awareness and understanding of political processes to influence legislative processes. By understanding the legislative and political process and who is influential, they can craft a compelling message that will appeal to all stakeholders. Additionally, connecting with critical local, state, and national players can create a solid network to help them achieve their goals and ensure their message is heard (Rafferty, 2018). To be successful in politics, a nurse leader must be able to navigate the complex political landscape.

Nurse leaders must effectively engage with politicians and other stakeholders to improve healthcare for all patients. They can help create positive change for themselves and their patients by demonstrating political competence. Being able to navigate the political landscape is essential for nurse leaders to achieve success. By demonstrating political competence, they can help improve healthcare for all patients.

In summary, nurse leaders need to be able to navigate the complex political landscape to achieve desired outcomes. They can create positive change for themselves and their patients by demonstrating political competence.
