Policy and Advocacy for Improving Population Health Term Paper
In 2016 Congress passed a bill that repealed the Affordable Care Act, but the president vetoed it. Soon after, legislators realized that the repeal proposal would affect the American voter. Many Republican legislators started to see their chances of getting reelected become an almost impossible goal if they supported the repeal or replacement of the Affordable Care Act. If the Affordable Care Act were repealed, the federal government would reduce spending by $927 billion by 2026. Nevertheless, like other problems, the reduction would cost in other areas, such as an increase in the number of uninsured people by 81%. Less than 14.5 million people would have Medicaid or CHIP (Buettgens et al.,2016) Policy and Advocacy for Improving Population Health Term Paper. In 2016 all Republican presidential candidates called for repealing the Affordable Care Act, proposing health policies instead to replace the Affordable Care Act (Buettgens et al.,2016) Policy and Advocacy for Improving Population Health Term Paper.

For many Americans, repealing or replacing the Affordable Care Act is not about vote counting; it is about whether they will be able to afford their prescriptions. For our health care providers, it is being able to provide proper care without worrying about uncompensated care. For states, it is being able to preserve jobs and business and having the necessary resources to address other public health emergencies such as the opioid crisis or the mental health crisis (Nuzum et al., 2017). A cost-benefit analysis showed that all legislators risked not getting reelected because of all the negative aspects mentioned above. Behind closed doors, policymakers are not necessarily focused on how people will be affected by the changes to the Affordable Care Act but on how the changes will affect their re-election chances ( Milstead and Short, 2019) Policy and Advocacy for Improving Population Health Term Paper.

Repeal and Replacement of Affordable Care Act
Thank you, Miriam, for your post.
I conquer with you that the Affordable Care Act was among the best strategy by President Obama to ensure access to quality, affordable care for all Americans. The Affordable Care Act was implemented in 2014 with significant concepts, including subsidized market coverage, Medicaid expansion, and individual mandate (Courtemanche et al., 2018). Its implementation increased the number of individuals with insurance coverage to 9.5% because the ramification of the cost to access healthcare was reduced. However, Donald Trump pledged to repeal and replace the ACA, which would negatively impact healthcare. Donald’s administration wanted to replace it with American Health Care Act, which would promote choice, quality, and affordability with health insurance (Willison & Singer, 2017) Policy and Advocacy for Improving Population Health Term Paper. However, I conquer with your post. Many American citizens rejected the initiative as most of them benefited from ACA. Additionally, legislators that supported the replacement and repeal of the act have slim chances of being re-elected to office.
The replacement of the Obama care would oversee repealing the individual mandate to purchase coverage. Additionally, Medicaid would remain, but premiums would increase for insurance plans by approximately 34%. The growth in the number of uninsured Americans would increase, and about 24 million Americans would lose their health coverage (Rice et al., 2018). This would negatively affect healthcare outcomes. I also agree that the repeal and replace resulted in political compromise as the Republican House of Representatives and senate legislators identified minimal re-election possibility. As such, the legislators against repealing and replacing ACA established the Better Care Reconciliation Act policy that would be an alternative to the American Health Care Act. The policy would help address the issue of spending and taxes that would cause a burden to the citizens. Policy and Advocacy for Improving Population Health Term Paper
