NURS 6053 Personal Leadership Philosophies Assignment

Assignment: Personal Leadership Philosophies
Many of us can think of leaders we have come to admire, be they historical figures, pillars of the industry we work in, or leaders we know personally. The leadership of individuals such as Abraham Lincoln and Margaret Thatcher has been studied and discussed repeatedly. However, you may have interacted with leaders you feel demonstrated equally competent leadership without ever having a book written about their approaches.

What makes great leaders great? Every leader is different, of course, but one area of commonality is the leadership philosophy that great leaders develop and practice. A leadership philosophy is basically an attitude held by leaders that acts as a guiding principle for their behavior. While formal theories on leadership continue to evolve over time, great leaders seem to adhere to an overarching philosophy that steers their actions.

What is your leadership philosophy? In this Assignment, you will explore what guides your own leadership.

The Assignment (2-3 pages):

Personal Leadership Philosophies

Develop and submit a personal leadership philosophy that reflects what you think are characteristics of a good leader. Use the scholarly resources on leadership you selected to support your philosophy statement. Your personal leadership philosophy should include the following: (I’ve included some notes beside each requirement of the assignment to assist in writing this paper)

A description of your core values. (My top 5 core values are Integrity, Accountability, Diligence, Perseverance, Discipline)
A personal mission and vision statement. (My company mission/vision is “To deliver superior care to every patient, every day, setting the standard by which others in the healthcare industry are judged.” I would like a personal mission/vision statement along those same lines by maintaining honesty and integrity and a strong work ethic.)NURS 6053 Personal Leadership Philosophies Assignment
An analysis of your CliftonStrengths Assessment summarizing the results of your profile (Summary of Strengths Assessment is Copied and Pasted below)
A description of two key behaviors that you wish to strengthen. (I personally would like to strengthen work-life balance and setting boundaries-I tend to get too close to my patients and staff)
A development plan that explains how you plan to improve upon the two key behaviors you selected and an explanation of how you plan to achieve your personal vision. Be specific and provide examples.
Be sure to incorporate your colleagues’ feedback on your CliftonStrengths Assessment from this Module’s Discussion 2. MY PERSONAL CLIFTON STRENGTHS:

SURVEY COMPLETION DATE: 06-21-2022
Many years of research conducted by The Gallup Organization suggest that the most effective people are
those who understand their strengths and behaviors. These people are best able to develop strategies to
meet and exceed the demands of their daily lives, their careers, and their families.
A review of the knowledge and skills you have acquired can provide a basic sense of your abilities, but an
awareness and understanding of your natural talents will provide true insight into the core reasons behind
your consistent successes.
Your Signature Themes report presents your five most dominant themes of talent, in the rank order
revealed by your responses to StrengthsFinder. Of the 34 themes measured, these are your “top five.” NURS 6053 Personal Leadership Philosophies Assignment
Your Signature Themes are very important in maximizing the talents that lead to your successes. By
focusing on your Signature Themes, separately and in combination, you can identify your talents, build
them into strengths, and enjoy personal and career success through consistent, near-perfect performance.

Achiever
Your Achiever theme helps explain your drive. Achiever describes a constant need for achievement. You
feel as if every day starts at zero. By the end of the day you must achieve something tangible in order to
feel good about yourself. And by “every day” you mean every single day—workdays, weekends, vacations.
No matter how much you may feel you deserve a day of rest, if the day passes without some form of
achievement, no matter how small, you will feel dissatisfied. You have an internal fire burning inside you. It
pushes you to do more, to achieve more. After each accomplishment is reached, the fire dwindles for a
moment, but very soon it rekindles itself, forcing you toward the next accomplishment. Your relentless need
for achievement might not be logical. It might not even be focused. But it will always be with you. As an
Achiever you must learn to live with this whisper of discontent. It does have its benefits. It brings you the
energy you need to work long hours without burning out. It is the jolt you can always count on to get you
started on new tasks, new challenges. It is the power supply that causes you to set the pace and define the
levels of productivity for your work group. It is the theme that keeps you moving. NURS 6053 Personal Leadership Philosophies Assignment
Maximizer
Excellence, not average, is your measure. Taking something from below average to slightly above average
takes a great deal of effort and in your opinion is not very rewarding. Transforming something strong into
something superb takes just as much effort but is much more thrilling. Strengths, whether yours or
someone else’s, fascinate you. Like a diver after pearls, you search them out, watching for the telltale signs
of a strength. A glimpse of untutored excellence, rapid learning, a skill mastered without recourse to
steps—all these are clues that a strength may be in play. And having found a strength, you feel compelled
to nurture it, refine it, and stretch it toward excellence. You polish the pearl until it shines. This natural
sorting of strengths means that others see you as discriminating. You choose to spend time with people
who appreciate your particular strengths. Likewise, you are attracted to others who seem to have found
and cultivated their own strengths. You tend to avoid those who want to fix you and make you well
rounded. You don’t want to spend your life bemoaning what you lack. Rather, you want to capitalize on the
gifts with which you are blessed. It’s more fun. It’s more productive. And, counterintuitively, it is more
demanding. NURS 6053 Personal Leadership Philosophies Assignment
Includer
“Stretch the circle wider.” This is the philosophy around which you orient your life. You want to include
people and make them feel part of the group. In direct contrast to those who are drawn only to exclusive
groups, you actively avoid those groups that exclude others. You want to expand the group so that as
many people as possible can benefit from its support. You hate the sight of someone on the outside
looking in. You want to draw them in so that they can feel the warmth of the group. You are an instinctively
accepting person. Regardless of race or sex or nationality or personality or faith, you cast few judgments.
Judgments can hurt a person’s feelings. Why do that if you don’t have to? Your accepting nature does not
necessarily rest on a belief that each of us is different and that one should respect these differences.
Rather, it rests on your conviction that fundamentally we are all the same. We are all equally important.
Thus, no one should be ignored. Each of us should be included. It is the least we all deserve.
Strategic
The Strategic theme enables you to sort through the clutter and find the best route. It is not a skill that can
be taught. It is a distinct way of thinking, a special perspective on the world at large. This perspective
allows you to see patterns where others simply see complexity. Mindful of these patterns, you play out
alternative scenarios, always asking, “What if this happened? Okay, well what if this happened?” This
recurring question helps you see around the next corner. There you can evaluate accurately the potential
obstacles. Guided by where you see each path leading, you start to make selections. You discard the
paths that lead nowhere. You discard the paths that lead straight into resistance. You discard the paths
that lead into a fog of confusion. You cull and make selections until you arrive at the chosen path—your
strategy. Armed with your strategy, you strike forward. This is your Strategic theme at work: “What if?”
Select. Strike. NURS 6053 Personal Leadership Philosophies Assignment
Woo
Woo stands for winning others over. You enjoy the challenge of meeting new people and getting them to
like you. Strangers are rarely intimidating to you. On the contrary, strangers can be energizing. You are
drawn to them. You want to learn their names, ask them questions, and find some area of common interest
so that you can strike up a conversation and build rapport. Some people shy away from starting up
conversations because they worry about running out of things to say. You don’t. Not only are you rarely at
a loss for words; you actually enjoy initiating with strangers because you derive satisfaction from breaking
the ice and making a connection. Once that connection is made, you are quite happy to wrap it up and
move on. There are new people to meet, new rooms to work, new crowds to mingle in. In your world there
are no strangers, only friends you haven’t met yet—lots of them.

My Core Values

The nursing profession calls upon us registered nurses to exercise leadership. The solid ways in which leadership can be attained and solidified is by developing a personal leadership philosophy. In my capacity as a nurse, I am guided by five core values that I closely regard as my philosophy. These are integrity, accountability, diligence, perseverance, and discipline. I demonstrate integrity by abiding by the set code of moral conduct while providing care. Broome and Marshall (2021) implicitly stated that leaders with integrity gain trust from their colleagues and patients. Accountability is about owning one’s craft. As a leader, I am responsible for the roles and responsibilities I am tasked with and the commitments I have made to the organization and myself. Diligence is about being persistent and committed to work. I exhibit this by immersing myself in the tasks assigned. Rosson (2019) mentioned that persistence involves committing oneself to work even when challenges persist. In the end, the winners are those who persist in their work. The last of my five core values is discipline. According to Belrhiti, Giralt and Marchal (2018)NURS 6053 Personal Leadership Philosophies Assignment, maintaining discipline attracts trust and respect from colleagues and patients, an element that is important in leadership.

My Mission Statement

My mission is to consistently deliver quality care to patients and through the practice set standards that others could refer to. This personal mission statement is advised by the principles of honesty, integrity, and a strong work ethic.

A Summary of My CliftonStrengths Assessment

Achiever – This indicates that I have a desire to achieve set goals and objectives. Commenting on the aspect of achiever, Duggan et al. (2015) stated that it is an innate drive to reach short and long-term milestones despite the challenges one faces.

Maximizer – The use of personal areas of strength and expertise to help realize higher goals and targets for the benefit of the entire group or organization. A maximizer does not settle for less and is always seeking to be the best in their field.

Includer – An individual that possesses this aspect seeks to include as many people as possible and make them part of the project or success. Ideally, such a person gains satisfaction from seeing many people benefit from an initiative as opposed to just a minimal number.

Strategic – This is a trait of seeking a long-term perspective on a situation. Strategic persons are not blind by the current challenges they face but rather perceive the bigger picture and devise ways of achieving strategic long-term goals. Such persons have multiple angles of looking at things and thereby many alternatives. They end up identifying what they feel to be the best course of action.

WooThis is a unique strength of the sociability of a person. In organizations, it helps to have a leader who is able to imbue confidence in their team as this harnesses trust and commitment. It helps to woo strangers and new people over because it is by doing this that one is able to discover their strengths, weaknesses, and skills which are then woven into the fabric of the organization or team NURS 6053 Personal Leadership Philosophies Assignment.

Key Behaviors That I Wish to Strengthen

Given the leadership traits that are required in a healthcare setting and tapping a few insights from the analyzed CliftonStrengths, I wish to strengthen two important aspects; Work-life balance and Setting Boundaries.

Personal Development Plan

Work and life balance will be achieved through integrity and diligence in my work. The commitment to executing tasks will enable me to complete the assigned tasks on time and deliver them in quality requiring fewer revisions or adjustments.  My personal vision will be achieved by aligning my strategic personal and professional goals with the ultimate objective; vision, which is to deliver quality care in a consistent way and with the aim to encourage others to do the same.
