Leadership Theories And Effects On Staff Essay Discussion

Describe a recently encountered health reform, care delivery re-design, or other clinical practice scenario that required strong leadership. What early/traditional/classic or contemporary leadership theory did the leader demonstrate and why. What effect did it have on the followers (or potential effect)?

Introduction

Leadership is a crucial factor determining the success of an organization in achieving its goals and objectives. Leadership serves to organize, direct, plan, and control the procurement and use of organizational resources. There are different styles of leadership, each with its advantages and disadvantages, and with varying levels of applicability in practical scenarios. Given the importance of leadership, this discussion seeks to address transformational leadership in a healthcare provision reform scenario and its impact on caregiving staff. Case Study

The provider I work with introduced a care delivery reform that involved implementing telehealth for consultations and follow-ups to reduce the number of people reporting to out-patient in order to limit exposure to COVID-19. The reform entailed introducing new networking hardware, a new program, integrating the system into legacy hospital systems such as the EHR, and training on how to use the system. One of the goals was to seamlessly switch patients to the telehealth. It was a big change in how things have been traditionally done and majority of the staff were uncertain. The new system was successfully implemented as evaluated with regard to cost, timeliness, acceptance by staff and clients, and effectively reducing patient exposure to COVID-19 by switching outpatient services from in-person to online. The system has been in use for the past 12 months. I observed that transformational leadership theory was extensively applied during the implementation of the change (Xu, 2017)Leadership Theories And Effects On Staff Essay Discussion. I attribute the success to the use of this theory by hospital administration in managing the reform.

Transformational Theory and its Effects on Staff

The transformational theory of leadership is one where leaders inspire followers to act as leaders. Leaders are characterized by idealized influence, visibility, openness to new ways of thinking, active listening, accepting of responsibility, trust, adherence to ethical standards, fostering a sense of belonging and ownership in the organization, acknowledging individual autonomy, and considering people as distinct entities (Cope & Murray, 2017). I think these elements of leadership greatly contributed to the successful implementation of the telehealth system. Effective leadership is essentially a product of effective role modelling. Transformational leaders demonstrate the behavior and actions they want the staff to emulate. There is clear and open communication, creativity, opportunities for leadership to subordinates, high level of skill, ability to consider all parties in decision making, innovation, adaptability, collective perspective, and willingness to explore new ideas (Alloubani et al, 2019)Leadership Theories And Effects On Staff Essay Discussion.

The impact is that staff are highly motivated and productive (Saleh et al, 2018). This is crucial in healthcare provision as motivated staff result in quality care provision and low turnover. There is also effective care delivery that preserves patient safety and ensures the outcomes of the care process are achieved (Kiwanuka et al, 2021)Leadership Theories And Effects On Staff Essay Discussion. In addition, the basic characteristics of transformational leadership help make for a healthy working environment with effective communication, fair conflict resolution, civility, and innovative ways of solving problems. The objective of transformational leadership is to make more leaders rather than more followers by altering the psychology of followers so that they behave as the leaders they want to become.

Conclusion

The use of transformational leadership theory facilitated the successful implementation of a telehealth system in my organization. Transformational leaders encourages workers to behave and think as leaders themselves. The effect of using this theory in the organization was increased productivity and motivation among staff, increased innovation in problem solving, more open communication, and a healthy working environment.
