Infancy: Controversy over vaccinations and the consequences over not vaccinating infants and children.
Be careful with your citations. You will at least need to cite the article that you read for the assignment and the textbook (when you are describing the development issues in question 5). Be sure to use APA formatting for your in-text citations and your references at the end of your paper.

– Students have a great deal of difficulty with question 6. Here I’m asking you to comment on how you would use the information from the article you read in the real-world; outside of college. For example, in the article about vaccinations, of what importance is this in the real world? Why do we want to know this information? How would you use it? What would you do differently in your life?
Answer the following questions in your report:
1. Write an introductory paragraph in which you explain the purpose of your paper. Note: Your purpose is NOT to write a paper for this class. By purpose I mean, what point are you trying to make with your paper?
2. Provide a brief summary of the article. Do not summarize the entire article. Include 1 – 2 paragraphs in which you summarize the major points of the article. This should be written in your own words. Only use a direct quote if there is a specific reason to use a quote. Do not forget to cite the article.
3. List and describe one piece of information that you found particularly interesting. Why was this information interesting to you?
4. What are the strengths and weaknesses of the article? Use at least two of the criteria listed below (How to Critically Evaluation an Article) to discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the article. You should have at least one strength and at least one weakness. Infancy: Controversy over vaccinations and the consequences over not vaccinating infants and children.
Here are some things to consider when evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of the article: Did the article come from a reputable source? Was the article easy to understand and follow? Did the article provide multiple pieces of data to support the claims it was making? Did the article use correlational data to make a statement about causation? Based on your experiences did anything in the article make you skeptical? If the article reported on research results, were there any problems with the research studies (i.e. small sample size, biased selection of participants, failing to control for extraneous variables, etc.)? Infancy: Controversy over vaccinations and the consequences over not vaccinating infants and children.
5. Apply the three main developmental issues discussed in our textbook (Santrock, pgs. 18-19) to the article. Did the article address nature and nurture, stability and change, OR continuity and discontinuity? You only need to discuss one of these three topics. Be sure to describe/define the issue first, and then provide an example of this issue as addressed in the article. The description/definition of the developmental issue should come from your textbook or another reputable source. However, you should NOT use direct quotes. Rewrite this information in your own words. Be sure to cite the textbook or other source used.
6. How might the information you learned be applied to everyday, real world life? How will you or someone else use this information outside of the classroom?
7. Write a conclusion paragraph in which you summarize the main points in your paper.
For useful tips I will also attach HOW TO CRITICALLY EVALUATE AN ARTICLE below:
1) Evaluate the source from which the article comes from: ? Where did the article come from? Book, website, etc. ? Is the source a scholarly or non-scholarly publication? (You can get help with determining this through online resources. One hint is to look and see if the articles within the source cite sources.) ? Is the publisher a well-known publisher? ? What has been said about the book online or by others? ? Are there multiple editions of the book? ? When was the book published? (The more recent the better especially in sciences)
2) Evaluate the credentials of the specific article: ? What are the author’s credentials? What is the level of education of the author? What institution is the author affiliated with? Has the author written a lot about this topic? Is he/she well respected in the field? (Some of this knowledge will come with experience in the field, but you can also research these things online or in the library) ? How recent is the article? (The more recent the better especially in sciences.) ? Does the article cite sources used in the article? Infancy: Controversy over vaccinations and the consequences over not vaccinating infants and children.
3) Evaluate the writing style: ? Who is the intended audience of the article? Does the article do a good job in appropriately communicating to the intended audience? Is it too easy? Too hard? Too scientific? Too statistical? ? Is the article easy to read? Does is flow logically? Is it easy to follow? Is it easy to grasp the major points of the article? One way to address this is to look for section headers that make sense. Does the information in that section relate to the section header? Infancy: Controversy over vaccinations and the consequences over not vaccinating infants and children.
4) Look at the objectivity of the paper: ? Is the information given in the article fact or opinion? This may be difficult to determine, but one way is to look at see if there is adequate evidence to support the points they are making. Then look to see if the supporting information is scientific (research based) or anecdotal (personal experiences). Is there more than one piece of information to support the point that is being made? ? Does the information differ from other known sources of information? Is it different than the information presented in the textbook, for example? ? Is the information significantly different from what you already knew or from what you’ve read before? If so, you may want to do some more research either into the author or into the topic. Look to see if the research is supported by well-known entities like National Institute of Mental Health. Look to see that other people support the same views as the author. Look for reviews of the author or the article. ? Did they provide coverage of alternate viewpoints? ? Did they critically evaluate the information that was cited in the article? Infancy: Controversy over vaccinations and the consequences over not vaccinating infants and children.
Again, You may have no more than three direct quotes in your paper. A paper with more than three direct quotes will receive a grade of 0.
