Healthcare Technology Advancements Discussion
Technological advances allow healthcare organizations, including hospitals and clinics, to gather, examine, and utilize data during patient care. Nursing informatics can be credited for allowing these technological advances in the healthcare field. Those who specialize in nurse informatics play an essential role in the process of healthcare delivery. They also play an important role in selecting, implementing, and evaluating healthcare, thus supporting higher-quality, safer care centered around the patient (McGonigle et al., 2022). In addition, with the creation and implementation of the electronic health record (EHR), nurse informatics now have an easier and more effective way of collaboration among all health care team members to help improve patient care and decrease the incidence of adverse patient outcomes (Alexander et al., 2018)Healthcare Technology Advancements Discussion.

In my nursing field, I use numerous programs and resources daily, including the EHR. The EHR allows my facility quick access to healthcare data from all the providers/clinics associated with our EHR network. This EHR system is so important and helpful because it allows each health care team member to access past and current medical records; labs; medication reconciliation, radiology reports, medical assessments and plans; and previous orders and pending orders (Mancha, 2015). Medication management is one area in which the EMR has dramatically improved. The EMR allows for safer medication administration because it has numerous checks and balances before medication is administered.
Just like all the other technology we use, software updates must be applied for the technology to remain up to date with the latest and most accurate evidence-based practices (Alexander et al., 2018). These software updates also ensure that the patient receives the best patient-centered care based on current guidelines (Alexander et al., 2018). When software updates are required, each healthcare facility should notify, in advance, that a software update will occur. Furthermore, every effort should be made to apply these updates overnight to avoid interruption to the day-to-day processes within the health care organization (Mosier et al., 2019). Education should also be provided to each health care professional to ensure a breakdown in the daily patient care routine; additionally, employees should also have the opportunity to address any software concerns before implementation (Mosier et al., 2019). At my current place of employment, advanced notice is given before any software update, and the update is typically performed at night to avoid disruptions in our daily processHealthcare Technology Advancements Discussion.
Technological advancements will do nothing more than enhance health care professional collaboration and patient care. As a result of modern technology and the recent use of medical informatics, healthcare professionals now have tools for improving documentation, transferring data, improving patient care, identifying potential problems, and easily sharing information (Rouleau et al., 2017). Healthcare professionals’ ability to make clinical decisions is enhanced by access to the electronic medical record, according McGonigle & Mastrian (2018). In addition, it restores confidence in the work performed by healthcare professionals and patient care. With these ever-advancing technologies, healthcare providers now have quick access to best practice guidelines, thus ultimately improving patient care and decreasing adverse patient outcomes by allowing each member of the healthcare team access to the real-time electronic medical record. Hello Jessica! Great discussion points! The advent of health information technology has proven to improve patient’s safety by reducing medication errors, reducing adverse drug reactions, and improving compliance to practice guidelines; Alotaibi & Federico (2017) define patient safety as a subset of healthcare involved in the avoidance, prevention, and amelioration of adverse outcomes or injuries stemming from the processes of health care while at the same time describes healthcare information technology (HIT) as “the application of information processing involving both computer hardware and software that deals with the storage, retrieval, sharing, and use of health care information, data, and knowledge for communication and decision making, nursing informatics therefore is viewed as a specialty in nursing practice that incorporates nursing science with other sciences in identifying, defining, managing, and communicating information and knowledge in nursing practice. The role of nurses in the digital environment has the potential to not only deliver improvements in efficiency and patient outcomes, but also to facilitate improved consumer and clinician experience. Darwish et al., (2021) demonstrate how telemedicine plays an important role in telephone triaging, prioritizing patient needs, monitoring for complication, and limiting spread of communicable diseases, telemedicine encompasses virtual formats such as chatbots, embodied conversational agents, three-dimensional avatars, and video consultations. To add on, telemedicine has great benefits such as; the video consultations promote nursing satisfaction by promoting timeless and limitless interactions with patients during real-time online sessions. According to Renu (2021), in the advent of COVID 19 pandemic, telemedicine helped to curb the spread of COVID 19 amidst a struggling healthcare workforce and shortage of PPEs. It also played a great role in revolutionizing chronic disease management by empowering patients to be active participants in their own health. Patients appreciate the continuity of care through close monitoring and managed referrals which boost their comfort and sense of security. Healthcare Technology Advancements Discussion
