Describe the policy in each country related to the identified healthcare issue The US adopted three policies. First, educating the American public on the dangers of opioid over prescription and misuse. Second, halt the supply of illegal opioids by interrupting international and domestic drug supply chains. Third, providing evidence based treatment and recovery support services (The White House, 2020). Government been at forefront of addressing issue through supporting prevention, treatment, harm reduction, and enforcement efforts (Government of Canada, 2020).
What are the strengths of this policy? The policy targets prevention and intervention efforts. In addition, it leverages the extensive resources available to the government. Besides that, it applies evidence-based interventions. Additionally, it controls access to opioids, particularly in international and domestic trades. What are the weaknesses of this policy? The policy does not indicate collaborative efforts from other stakeholders. In addition, it relies on government spending that is inflexible. This makes it difficult to change what the money is spent on. Besides that, it has a discriminatory impact as it has made illegal opioid trade lucrative. Explain how the social determinants of health may impact the specified global health issue. (Be specific and provide examples)Global Healthcare Assignment Paper
Four social determinants impact the opioid epidemic. First, health care access can improve controlled and safe use of opioids through public education efforts. Second, social support networks can enhance treatment and prevention efforts. Third, physical environment determines access to opioids, especially illegal opioids like heroin. Fourth, socioeconomic status influences trade in illegal opioids. Four social determinants impact the opioid epidemic. How has each country’ government addressed cost, quality, and access to the selected global health issue? The government funds the policy efforts, thus ensuring that the public can access the associated services. The government funds the policy efforts, thus ensuring that the public can access the associated services.
How has the identified health policy impacted the health of the global population? (Be specific and provide examples) The policy has had limited effect on addressing the opioid epidemic. In 2016, 42,000 deaths were attributed to opioid overdoses. The number increased to 63,486 in 2020 (14,480 from heroin overdose and 48,006 from synthetic opioids overdose) (US Department of Health and Human Services, 2021). The policy has limited effect on addressing the opioid epidemic. In 2019, 3,747 opioid toxicity deaths were reported, while in 2021, 7,362 opioid toxicity deaths were reported. This indicates a 96% increase (Government of Canada, 2022b)Global Healthcare Assignment Paper.
Describe the potential impact of the identified health policy on the role of nurse in each country. The policy enhanced role of nurses as they engage in prevention and treatment efforts. The policy enhanced role of nurses as they engage in prevention and treatment efforts.
Explain how global health issues impact local healthcare organizations and policies in both countries. (Be specific and provide examples) The epidemic has had two impacts. First, called for greater control over access to opioids, especially illegal opioids. Second, encouraged investment in prevention and treatment efforts. The epidemic has had two impacts. General Notes/Comments The statistics indicate that the policy has much room for improvement. There is a need for the government to collaborative with other non-government partners in pooling resources and applying them in addressing the epidemic. Part 2: A Plan for Social Change
There is a need for vigilant, coordinated and sustained efforts to contain the opioid epidemic and ameliorate the harm it has caused to the society. The statistics reveal that the current efforts have not done must to address the epidemic. This reveals that even if the treatment efforts are substantially ramped up as is the case, the numbers would not reduce as more people continue to use opioids. In essence, there is a need for coordinated and sustained effort that brings together resources from government and non-government agencies. These coordinated efforts should be targeted at applying scientifically grounded clinical practices and policies that would reshape access to opioids, particularly prescription practices so that the occurrence of new opioid misuse and abuse cases are curtailed. In addition, a systems approach should be applied that matches evidence-based jurisdictional level interventions (government policies) with clinical interventions at the level of individual patients. Besides that, government efforts should be coordinated across regions to curtail the international trade in illegal opioids. For instance, identifying heroin traders operating across borders and targeting them for prosecution. In essence, the plan should focus on reducing harm (such as availing sterile needles and naloxone), reducing demand, influencing prescribing practices, and restricting supply (Haley, Johnson & Frazier, 2022)Global Healthcare Assignment Paper.

If you talk about a possible poor health outcome, do you believe that outcome will occur? Do you believe eye contact and personal contact should be avoided? Global Healthcare Assignment Paper
You would have a difficult time practicing as a nurse if you believed these to be true. But they are very real beliefs in some cultures.
Differences in cultural beliefs, subcultures, religion, ethnic customs, dietary customs, language, and a host of other factors contribute to the complex environment that surrounds global healthcare issues. Failure to understand and account for these differences can create a gulf between practitioners and the public they serve.
In this Assignment, you will examine a global health issue and consider the approach to this issue by the United States and by one other country.
To Prepare:
- Review the World Health Organization’s (WHO) global health agenda and select one global health issue to focus on for this Assignment.
- Select at least one additional country to compare to the U.S. for this Assignment.
- Reflect on how the global health issue you selected is approached in the U.S. and in the additional country you selected.
- Review and download the Global Health Comparison Matrix provided in the Resources Global Healthcare Assignment Paper.
The Assignment: (1- to 2-page Global Health Comparison Matrix; 1-page Plan for Social Change)
Part 1: Global Health Comparison Matrix
Focusing on the country you selected and the U.S., complete the Global Health Comparison Matrix. Be sure to address the following:
- Consider the U.S. national/federal health policies that have been adapted for the global health issue you selected from the WHO global health agenda. Compare these policies to the additional country you selected for study.
- Explain the strengths and weaknesses of each policy.
- Explain how the social determinants of health may impact the global health issue you selected. Be specific and provide examples.
- Using the WHO’s Organization’s global health agenda as well as the results of your own research, analyze how each country’s government addresses cost, quality, and access to the global health issue selected.
- Explain how the health policy you selected might impact the health of the global population. Be specific and provide examples.
- Explain how the health policy you selected might impact the role of the nurse in each country.
- Explain how global health issues impact local healthcare organizations and policies in both countries. Be specific and provide examples Global Healthcare Assignment Paper.
Part 2: A Plan for Social Change
Reflect on the global health policy comparison and analysis you conducted in Part 1 of the Assignment and the impact that global health issues may have on the world, the U.S., your community, as well as your practice as a nurse leader.
