Introduction

This reflection paper focuses on two important issues I nursing. Firstly, it delves into the issue of evidence based practice which means that care provided by nurse practitioners is based on proven and verified methods and practice. Secondly, the reflection addresses the issue of ethics in research. As will be elaborated, ethics is the idea of basing nursing care practice on a predetermined code of ethics.

 Thoughts On Evidence-Based Practice

Evidence-based practice is perhaps the most common concept in nursing as it emerged throughout this module and others done in the past. EBP has been defined by Albarqouni, Hoffmann, and Glasziou (2018) as an approach to healthcare delivery where evidence from research and patient data are integrated with care-based practices. Reflecting on class lectures and research work done, the justification for using an EBP approach is to move nursing practice away from rigid step-by-step standards which ignore the evidence on health and patient outcomes. In addition to this, evidence-based research is backed by quantifiable data which makes it easy for nursing practitioners to share it with others and for them to show as evidence why they applied the methods. I learned that the use of the evidence-based practice in nursing improves the quality and outcomes of care for patients. I submit that my participation in class discussions on the topic of evidence-based practice honed my knowledge and awareness of the importance of this practice. An issue that emerged in the course of researching the topic is that in spite of the multitude of benefits that are associated with the practice, there are a few challenges that students and new nurses face. The fact that evidence-based research is broad, it takes quite some experience for nurses to be conversant with them and this is where the challenge comes. McMahon and Patel (2019) have commented that the lack of knowledge on EBP basics could hinder the clinical performance of nascent nurses. However, this could be remedied through dedication to research and continuous improvement in areas where these nurses specialize in.

Ethics in Research

Research in healthcare and medicine, in general, is very sensitive and must be done without any malice or bias. Nursing research and practice too must be done with the objective of improving health outcomes for patients. A broadly covered topic in this module was ethics in research which is defined by Möller et al. (2021) as the moral principles or code of conduct that guide researchers to conduct their research work without any ill-intention or deception. In retrospect, I recognize that people seeking medical care place their trust in clinical practitioners who in turn base their work on evidence from research. I recognize that in an event where research work is not genuine; not guided by moral principles, there is a lot of harm that could be done to people. I have learned that adherence to moral principles creates a much-needed environment for trust to develop. Fellow researchers are motivated by the awareness that their peers and colleagues in research work and practice are guided by ethical principles whose overall objective is the betterment of healthcare knowledge. Voultsos et al. Arguably, the reason why medical-based research, especially, has become synonymous with integrity and excellence is because of the moral principles that guide the industry. Researchers especially in the medical field are constantly reminded that they play a crucial role in society because of the simple fact that they deal with human subjects. I learned that ethics in research underscore the fact that all actions have consequences. From the point of view of a researcher, moral ethics makes them aware that their research is relied upon by a string of dependents including evidence-based users in clinical care such as nurses, academic institutions, government agents, and people in general. In the event that such research is misleading could trigger negative consequences for users and researchers.

 

Perception of MSN graduates’ role in nursing research

Those in the medical and nursing profession recognize that different levels of qualification in nursing accrue different roles and responsibilities. In nursing, the type and level of research work a Registered Nurse is expected to do are contextually different from what a Master of Science in Nursing or a Doctor of Nursing Practice graduate is required to do as a researcher. In the course of this module, we discussed in class and group sessions the roles and responsibilities of a Master of Science in nursing graduate. Interestingly, society and professionals from other fields have their expectations and assumptions of the roles that we as MSN graduates should do (McMahon & Patel, 2019)Evidence-Based Research Assignment Paper. It has for a long time been presumed that a Master of Science in Nursing plays a subordinate role in nursing research. Quite the contrary, there are a lot of research responsibilities that MSN graduates play. For instance, since nursing practice is evidenced based, these graduates identify issues in their lines of work, develop questions and engage in research work to try and find solutions for the issues. Ordinarily, they model their questions in a PICOT format to ensure that all components or problems, intervention, comparison, outcome, and time frame are covered. It was mentioned in class that MSN graduates are especially benefited by the growth of nursing informatics as they are able to easily collect health information data and use it to inform their findings.

Looking back, the experiences I had while studying this unit were more than I hoped for. Truth be told, I expected that the concepts that would be taught in class would be complex and replete with medical and nursing complexity but I must admit that quite the opposite happened.
