Evidence Based Nursing Practice And Patient Cultural Diversity Discussion

As a nurse working on the ward on a day to day basis with diverse patients, I have had a rich experience over the years. This experience continues to get enriched with each passing day of my career. One particular recent experience has prompted this reflection. I had the rare experience of taking care of a patient who happens to be an immigrant and asylum seeker from Syria in the Middle East. I was struck by the cultural differences that exist between the American people and persons from that part of the world. I noted in particular that the patient’s culture was absolutely indistinguishable and inseparable from his religion which is Islam. The above experience made me feel quite inadequate in terms of cultural competence and multiculturalism (       Coleman, 2019). It made me feel that I actually need some more intensive cultural competence training on top of what I already have (Young & Guo, 2016). Indeed I learnt a lot of things from this experience. To begin with, I discovered that a patient’s outcomes become excellent once they realise that you respect their culture and beliefs. Secondly, I learnt that persons from the Middle East revere their religion and live it as a way of life every day. For instance, provision must be made for the patient so that they can pray five times in a day (a quite room with a mat)Evidence Based Nursing Practice And Patient Cultural Diversity Discussion.

From the above experience, what I learnt that was god is that there are a lot of stereotypes about Muslims and especially persons from the Middle East that are very far from the truth. Not all of them are terrorists. I learnt so much about their culture and religion that I now feel so much at ease to the point of wanting to travel there as a tourist some day. What I learnt that was not so good was that a lot of cultural norms among them have been assimilated into religion such that they remain sacred and not open to challenge.

The above experience has impacted me as a person in that I have become more aware of other cultures and more enlightened. Concerning my practice, the experience has made me a better and much more culturally competent nurse (McFarland & Wehbe-Alamah, 2019)Evidence Based Nursing Practice And Patient Cultural Diversity Discussion. Indeed, I am sure that this experience will bring a change in my professional behavior. Going forward, I will not hold any stereotypes I hear about any culture until I found out more about it. This way I will be able to serve my patients better and achieve desired outcomes.
