The goals and objectives set during the practicum are aimed at guiding ensuring I use all the skills to perfect my experiences. The first goal was to match psychotherapeutic modalities with those of the patient’s clinical treatment needs. This goal was achieved by accomplishing the target objectives. For instance, the use of non-verbal and verbal communication was crucial to the patients in helping them understand their mental issues. Also, I was able to accomplish the goal thorough understanding the patient’s gestures and nonverbal movements such as facial expressions, silence, and body movement. The creation of a rapport was very important in achieving this goal through ensuring patients gain trust in me and also the confidence to open up at our first session. The second goal was to improve my skills and be able to accurately provide diagnoses using the DSM-5 method. I was able to achieve this goal by being critical in differentiating between the differential diagnosis and the main diagnosis. Also, the ability to apply diverse diagnostic tools was a step ahead in achieving the goal. Also, in achieving this goal I was able to effectively identify and apply the right diagnosis.

The third goal in my practicum experience plan was developing trust with the patients through the use of ethical and legal standards of care. This goal was achieved by being well-informed about legal and ethical standards of practice. In addition, patient education was crucial in helping them overcome the issues such as stigma and discrimination that come with mental illness. Further, this goal was achieved by ensuring patients are well aware of the nature and the side effects of the psych medications.

During my practicum, there were many challenges and also great moments with patients. However, three patients were the most challenging in terms of dealing with them and helping them recover. The first one was the patient I encountered who had been forced into the session by the family. The other was a patient who turned out to be argumentative and with every issue raised, she tried to counter using her opinions. The third patient I found challenging was a gentleman in his early thirties who felt that as a therapist I was fully responsible for his well-being. I was able to learn that in psychotherapy patience was crucial and that every client was different and should be handled differently (Voutilainen, 2018). In addition, I realized that patients were responsible for their well-being and mine was just guidance and guiding them on what to do to heal. Several resources were available including counseling rooms, tables, chairs, computers for demonstrating activities, medications, and also some physical exercise materials.

An important evidence-based practice I used during my practicum was a collaborative approach where patients were given a voice (Frank, 2020). When the patient has the autonomy to express themselves they tend to begin the process of healing immediately (Frank, 2020). Given another chance, I would be critical in ensuring patients’ education is enhanced as this ensures they become focused from the start of the session.

Patients’ flow and volume were managed by ensuring every session is allocated an equal amount of time to prevent consuming a lot of time with one patient. In addition, a set of sessional questions were framed to ensure they offer direction hence managing many clients in a day.

Moving forward I will perfect my skills and knowledge including improving my communication (Kleiven, 2020). According to my preceptor, little refining of my questioning and client engagement will help. For instance, maintaining eye contact with clients and being able to read their minds on time is a critical aspect that I needed to learn.
