Since the early l960s there has been a steady increase in the number of interracial marriages and relationships, proba bly due to a combination of several signifi cant social forces — including the civil rights movement, the counterculture movement, and the women’s movement — which re sulted in more liberal social attitudes to ward race relations, sexual mores, and the status of women. While the proportion of interracial marriages between blacks and whites is still quite small, the actual num ber of such unions has increased from 65,000 in 1970 to 164,000 in 1983, an in crease of 150% (National, 1985).
