Globally, the elderly population is rapidly increasing, and the World Health Organization projects that by 2050, the number of individuals over 60 will increase to 2.1 billion (World Health Organization, 2021). However, it is essential to ensure that the nurses cater well for the population’s well-being and mental health. That is because neurological and mental disorders among older adults lead to approximately 6.6 per cent of the elderly-related total disabilities. These patient populations’ mental healthcare needs are essential because they are an integral commitment as family members, active participants and volunteers in society. Hence, as a Doctor of Nursing Practice, one can participate in changing policies at a community level. For instance, the DNP needs to register with their respective nursing professional bodies that can steer forward the nursing policy change easily. That is because a professional nursing organization like American Nurses Association helps over 4 million nurses to explore their potential in influencing policy-making processes at all governmental levels, such as a meeting or contacting the elected officials that can help push through bills that of insuring the elderly ensure easy access of the healthcare services (ANA, n.d)Changing Policy At The Community Level Assignment.
Besides patients’ welfare, nurses face many issues when delivering care to their target population. These issues include poor nurse-to-patient ratio, high turnover rates, and increased burnout (Curley, 2019). In such a case, the nurses can advocate for the federal government to give grants to healthcare organizations at all levels to promote innovations and hiring processes that will increase a positive work environment. Also, DNP needs to engage in evidence-based practices that will increase their knowledge on providing patient-centric and individualized care, thus improving patients’ overall well-being. Conclusively, the DNP position is essential since the nurses’ advanced knowledge of clinical matters makes it easier to participate in activities that help improve healthcare services.
