In simple terms, Poiseuille’s law explains the dynamics that are at play when a fluid such as blood or lymph flows inside the vessel in which it moves. The blood is to the vascular system what lymph is to the lymphatic system of tubes. The fluid pressure in these enclosed tubular systems has a special mathematical relationship to the velocity, viscosity, and length of the tube or vessel in which it flows. Considering the law of Physics as applied to a biological system such as the human body, the velocity or speed of blood and lymph in their tubular systems will be directly proportional to the pressure of the blood and lymph in the vessel. Also, that velocity of the blood or lymph will be directly proportional to the fourth power of the radius (r4) of the vessel. What this means is that the higher the speed of flow the higher the pressure and the value of r4. However, the velocity of the blood or lymph will be inversely proportional to the viscosity or thickness of the blood or lymph as well as the length of the vessel. This means the thicker the blood (for instance), the slower it will flow through the vessels. Ohm’s law is another law in Physics related to electricity that is a mirror image of Poiseuille’s law; only that it describes the relationship that current has with pressure (voltage) and resistance.
