Nurse Patient Relationship Verses Researcher Patient Relationship Discussion
How do you think the nurse–patient relationship and the researcher–participant relationship is alike?
The nurse-patient and researcher-participant relationships have similarities. In both cases, there are clear roles with the nurse and researcher acting as professional experts while the patient and participant act as novices. As the experts, the nurse and researcher guide the relationship and determine the roles of each person. In addition, the relationship is characterized by trust. The patient and participant trust that the nurse and researcher will act in their best interest and not cause them any harm. The trust is important because the patient and participant must believe in the work that the nurse and researcher do in order to work with them. Besides that, the relationship is characterized by adherence to bioethical principles (autonomy, justice, beneficence and non-maleficence) applied in evaluating the merits and demerits of all interactions (Hall & Roussel, 2022)Nurse Patient Relationship Verses Researcher Patient Relationship Discussion.

How are they different?
While the two relationships have similarities, they also have some differences. First, the nurse-patient relationship is more personal while the researcher-participant relationship is impersonal, ranging from the participants being completely unknown to the researchers to the researchers partnering with the participants, and the researchers acting as the participants. Second, there is a focus on extending the connection between the nurse and patient to provide better care, while the connection between the researcher and participant is limited to the focus of the research. Third, there is a reciprocal relationship between the nurse and patient that is influence by the professional and personal characteristics of both parties, while there is a one-way relationship between the researcher and participant with the researcher directing the study while the participant providers the research data (Hall & Roussel, 2022)Nurse Patient Relationship Verses Researcher Patient Relationship Discussion.
Does cultural diversity play a role in this relationship?
Cultural diversity plays a relation in the relationship between nurses and patients, and researchers and participants. Nurses and researchers operate under a code of ethics guided by bioethical principles to act in their (patients and participants) best interests and not cause harm. As patient and participant populations are diverse, nurses and researchers must reflect on their diversity to develop cultural competency that allows them to communicate more openly. This allows the patients and participants to feel safer within the relationship (Cherry & Jacob, 2019)Nurse Patient Relationship Verses Researcher Patient Relationship Discussion.
