The Group Therapy Techniques Demonstrated in the Video

The communication techniques used in the video were appropriate with Jimmy commencing the therapy session by verbalizing that he had something to contribute to the group. Following the pause Jimmy, the therapist encouraged the speaker to continue speaking after allowing him to recollect his thoughts. The participant in the session was respectful as they embraced turn-taking as everyone was allowed time to share their thoughts and experiences. The understanding of the group therapy session was amazing as observations from the video displayed the therapist conducting the group therapy meeting prudently. The video demonstrated that group therapy is essential in enhancing self-confidence and individual growth. The session was helpful as individuals with diverse psychological problems and mental illnesses openly shared their experiences and thoughts. The session was conducted to assist individuals to manage and stopping symptoms linked to mental illnesses thus enabling them TO improve their well-being and function optimally. However, the outcomes of the group session will be enhanced by handling group development and other group dynamics differently (McPherson et al., 2018)Foundations of Group Work and Types of Therapy Assignment. For instance, approaches to developing and sustaining group cohesion should be enhanced. Although the therapist insisted on some aspects of order that can develop and sustain the group, I believe the culture of the group should be developed further. The therapist reiterated that members should be respectful among themselves and avoid labels or unhelpful terms in the group.

Disruptive Individuals in Group Therapy

Having disruptive group members in group therapy is usual as people’s behavior, feelings, and intentions vary from one group to another. As a therapist in group sessions, there is a need to ensure clients become aware of respectful communication that allows turn-taking to minimize disruptions. Individuals who cause disruptions during group therapy are disrespectful and their behavior may cause conflicts leading to negative outcomes in group therapy (Alavi et al., 2021)Foundations of Group Work and Types of Therapy Assignment. Disruptive individuals display behaviors such as shouting or other verbal attacks hence leaders should control the meetings to minimize that habit. The therapist should help group members to comprehend that the essence of group therapy is to enable members to recover and enjoy the sessions.

Ways of Eliciting Participation in the Group

To foster active participation and active involvement among group members, there is a need to prioritize creating a safe environment with equality that allow members to articulate issues without fear of ridicule. The participation of members is encouraged through the demonstration of acts of compassion and affirming statements that promote open communication processes. The use of verbal and non-verbal communication methods such as the use of gestures should be used for the acknowledgment of emotions and feelings (McPherson et al., 2018)Foundations of Group Work and Types of Therapy Assignment. The therapist should use reflections to reiterate and paraphrase client concerns to assist the group members to reexamine previously misunderstood or undiscovered emotional reactions.

The findings that I anticipate in different phases of group therapy are effective interventions for the management of psychosocial problems among patients with psychiatric conditions. The findings will be positively channeled through confident and open-minded approaches by the therapist to enable members to share outcomes of treatment approaches and their views on improving interventions.

Group therapy can be effectively used to develop self-awareness, socialization, and communication skills that allow individuals with psychiatric problems to express their concerns and accommodate challenges. The therapist should avoid conflict in the group thus enhancing group sustainability but the group rules should be made a routine if I was in that position. There is a need for the therapist to reduce outbursts to enable the member to develop effective coping mechanisms (Ahmad & Nurwianti, 2020). Also, prompt solutions should be developed to prevent disruptive situations from getting out of hand as the conflicts caused may disrupt the unity of the group creating a tense environment that may impede recovery and growth.
