Nurses spend the most time with patients while attending to them; hence understanding challenges facing patients in a healthcare organization. For this reason, nurses advocate for policy changes to address the identified problems, improving the quality of patient care. This discussion presents a problem identified at the healthcare organization that can be advocated through legislation.
The selected problem is the high rate of catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) in the healthcare organization. Data from the dashboard indicates a dramatic increase in CAUTIs in the past year. The national benchmark for CAUTI is 35.2 per 1000 catheter days (Aldecoa et al., 2022)Advocacy Through Legislation Research Paper. On the contrary, the healthcare reports approximately 182 per 1000 catheter days. This proportion is five times higher than the national benchmark, indicating that the high rate of CAUITIs is a major challenge facing healthcare organizations. This problem affects patients admitted to the inpatient unit, especially critical-ill patients with catheter insertion (Haque et al., 2018). The healthcare organization has adopted training progress to educate healthcare providers on how to practice hand hygiene, including washing hands with soap and water and using alcohol hand rub. This evidence-based intervention aims at preventing the transmission of disease-causing microorganisms from one patient to another via healthcare providers’ hands (Sands et al., 2020). If the high rate of CAUTIs continues in the organization, it will result in adverse health outcomes, including high morbidity and mortality rates, longer stay, and high readmission rate. Additionally, CAUTIs increase the overall cost of care (Benenson et al., 2020)Advocacy Through Legislation Research Paper.
