Reflection on EI Assessment Results

John’s Reflective Model

The healthcare system experiences various conflicts ranging from staff and clinicians, patients and their families, health professionals, and physicians. The conflicts can be detrimental to the quality-of-service delivery interfering with employee engagement, satisfaction, and motivation. However, the conflicts can be used to trigger career development through personal growth, productivity, organizational changes, and innovations. Following the wide range of conflicts in the health care setting, nurse leaders are engaged in regular conflict resolution involving simple to complex controversies that can result in litigations. The paper applies John’s model of reflection in developing a well-structured reflection of a workplace experience that uses the various elements of EI noted in the assessment results.

Description of the Experience

I was day shift for one week when I realized I had made three consecutive handovers to Julian, a colleague on a night shift at the same time. The first three days of the week were intense, and I noted that I left some uncompleted work for Julian to take over during the shift changes. I perceived it as normal to have tasks overlapping since nursing is a continuous process that utilizes handovers to enhance continuity in care delivery. However, I noted growing tension with Julian, especially the reaction during the handover process. She was discontent with me leaving behind pending work. Reflection

I noted the growing tension between us and opted to compromise to establish a mutual understanding. I figured out the involving task and cleared my schedule in some instances or left easy tasks pending to leverage her and clear the tension. However, I realized that my compromise was not a long-term solution, and I required a better strategy to counter the tension and foster our interprofessional relations. Based on the fact that each person has unique long-term professional goals, I imagined Julian, too, had individual goals. A compromise was not a solution to the workplace challenges since we were colleagues. We will be paired over and over again in the care continuum.

Anticipatory

Internal and external factors influenced my decision to compromise the tension and promote cooperation. I prefer to maintain a low profile and would not like to be at the center of any conflict and care about how people view me. I wouldn’t like people to refer to me as a troublemaker and a difficult person to work with. Besides, the disciplinary committee and the human resource department had contacted various training programs on mitigating workplace conflicts. I did not want to be on the top list of people with issues right after the training. In light, I preferred maintaining peaceful shift interactions that escalate the tension into a conflict. I feel I could have handled the pressure differently. Communication is an important aspect of relationship building. Therefore, I should have engaged Julian in a discussion and established a mutual solution by sharing our insights and perspectives to foster a long-term working relationship. Based on Giese (2016), self-reflection can aid mitigate the challenges in the practices in the clinical setting. Citing the healthcare biases for patients with obesity, Giese (2016) reiterated the significance of self-reflection in alleviating the biases in patient management. Communication and cooperation would provide better options for resolving the tension rather than compromising and overworking, which risks the quality of nursing care. Insights

The experience justified that workplace conflicts are inevitable and should be embraced and addressed based on individual emotions and feelings. One of the solutions to workplace conflicts, especially in my case establishing a mutual support base. The nursing profession demands a high-performance team to enhance conflict resolution outcomes and improve interpersonal relations to eliminate work-related stress. Besides, I noted that I have poor relationship management skills, which are crucial for workplace collaboration. According to Wain (2017), daily experiences create room for learning through reflection and allow for professional revalidation and development. I saw the need to integrate relationship management aspects of EI into my practices to enhance interpersonal relations and promote teamwork. Despite being a colleague and following each other on shifts, I failed to recognize an ample approach to handle the growing tension between Julian and me. I should have applied the competencies of relationship management that promote persuasion and listening with integrity and serve as change catalysts. Conclusion

The nursing profession is dynamic and multifaceted, exerting significant pressure on the practitioners. The demanding healthcare atmosphere may reflect in constant conflicts, which calls for amicable approaches to resolve and establish a collaborative environment. My case highlights some of the unavoidable conflicts in workplaces that require collaborative resolution to establish a common solution. However, I decided to compromise, which was just a short-term solution to the scenario likely to be repeated.
