Module 4 Assignment (Introduction): American Nurses Association (ANA) Competencies and Standards in Practice

Recall that the application of professional competencies and standards from a student perspective is the ability to develop a mindset for continuous improvement, adaptation, and evolution in the dynamic field of informatics. Recall also that mentorship can play a role in this pursuit. Therefore, seeking professionals to learn from is, in itself, a valuable skill. In the Module 4 Assignment, you activate these valuable skills when you conduct an interview with a nurse informaticist to examine the application of standards and competencies from the American Nurses Association (ANA).

For the Module 4 Assignment, due next week in Week 9, you are required to conduct an interview of a professional nurse informaticist in a public health department as part of your overall consideration of nursing standards and competencies.

This week, focus on Part 1, in which you identify and analyze nursing standards and competencies for a short paper.

In addition, focus on finding an interview subject, arranging for an interview, and conducting the interview in order to complete Part 2 and the Module 4 Interview Guidelines handout. The Module 4 Interview Guidelines handout contains important information about how to arrange an interview, tips for conducting the interview, and other requirements related to the interview itself. Note: You are allowed to interview the same person you interviewed in Module 2.

 

Part 1: ANA Competencies and Standards Identification

  • Review the American Nurses Association competencies found in the Nursing Informatics: Scope and Standards of Practice and reflect on the ANA functional areas detailed to determine which interests you the most.
  • Review the TIGER competencies and reflect on which of these you could develop based on how they relate to the ANA functional areas.

Last week, you focused on identifying thestandards and competencies relevant to your practice and finding an interview subject, arranging for an interview, and conducting the interview in order to complete Part 2 and the Module 4 Interview Guidelines handout.

This week, you consider the results of the interview with a nurse informaticist to examine and reflect upon the application of competencies and standards in your own nursing practice.

 

To Prepare

Part 1: ANA Competencies and Standards Identification

  • Review the American Nurses Association competencies found in the Nursing Informatics: Scope and Standards of Practiceand reflect on the ANA functional areas detailed to determine which interests you the most.
  • Review the TIGER competencies and reflect on which of these you could develop based on how they relate to the ANA functional areas.
  • Review the QSEN competencies and reflect on which of these you could develop based on how they relate to the ANA functional areas.

 

Part 2: ANA Competencies and Standards in Practice

  • Identify a nurse informaticist to interview. You may interview the same nurse informaticist you interviewed in Module 2.
  • Set up an interview date and time. Consult the Module 4 Interview Guidelines handout for guidance. In the Module 4 Interview Guidelines handout, you will find a form for the interview subject to sign as proof for the interview occurring.
  • Develop interview questions that address all of the following:
    • An explanation of the interview subject’s current role.
    • A description of the challenges the interview subject has overcome, currently encounters, and foresees.
    • A description of how the ANA functional areas, TIGER competencies, and QSEN competencies relate to the interview subject’s role.
  • Evaluate your responses in Part 1 and compare your responses with the responses from your interview subject.

 

Part 1: ANA Competencies and Standards Identification

Submit a 2- to 3-page paper that addresses the following:
