Persons with intellectual disorders significantly experience challenges in seeking dental services, especially in rural settings, and require the implementation of strategies and mechanisms that enhance their dental health. A study by (Suresh et al., 2022) indicates that some of the key factors that influence dental care in these patients include extreme fear and anxiety compounded with difficulties in following instructions and maintaining the desired posture during the procedure. However, it is surprising that most dentists, especially in rural settings, lack specialized training for addressing the needs of persons with intellectual disability, necessitating the use of physical and chemical restraints (Park et al., 2023)Dental Care for Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities Essay Assignment. Therefore, this paper aims to analyze the context of the issue, the existing barriers, and common practice issues that may influence the target population and form the basis for implementing evidence-based practices.
Two Significant Factors that Could Affect My Proposed Project
Intellectual Disability patients require specialized care in dental care to manage their unique needs and preferences. Therefore, dental service providers, particularly in rural settings, are often affected by biases and assumptions. These are the two critical factors that must be addressed to enhance the overall safety, effectiveness, accuracy, and individualized care of ID patients. Biases among the rural dentists toward these patients’ population hinder their willingness to adopt new and individualized strategies. Some dentists may view these patients as too challenging or resource-intensive to care for (Park et al., 2023)Dental Care for Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities Essay Assignment. On the other hand, assumptions from caregivers indicating that restraints are always needed when providing care to these patients limit their participation in providing comprehensive healthcare services. (Suresh et al., 2022) indicate that biases and stigma against persons with intellectual disability and patients with dental needs may influence shared decision-making approaches and how professionals and the community can engage the patients in managing their needs, fostering skepticism and resistance. Addressing these two factors (biases and assumptions) is an urgent and critical need in which healthcare professionals and stakeholders can implement measures to enhance the overall quality of care and promote advocacy for persons with ID as vulnerable populations.
Potential Obstacle(s) to the Target Population’s Engagement with the Proposed Project
One of the potential factors that may limit the targeted population’s participation in the proposed project is the mistrust among healthcare professionals due to past negative experiences. Individuals and populations with intellectual disabilities may be skeptical of the new initiatives aiming to improve the nature of the services offered (Suresh et al., 2022)Dental Care for Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities Essay Assignment. Inadequate support and understanding from dental professionals may also result in fear, which may also impact the interaction between these patients and healthcare professionals. In addition, these patients may also require adequate time to comprehensively assess their needs and provide services that address their needs. However, due to the existing time constraints and logistical challenges, it may be difficult for dental professionals to provide comprehensive dental services that help these populations manage their health issues and needs and adapt them to the underlying healthcare needs (Kangutkar et al., 2022)Dental Care for Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities Essay Assignment. Failure to actively engage the targeted population may also result in the inability of the population to offer effectiveness in the service delivery approaches and adapt to the underlying needs and gaps.
Outcome(s) of the Proposed Project and the Societal Conversations that may Rise from It
The project aims to create a collaborative approach in which healthcare professionals and stakeholders can apply a collaborative approach in providing compassionate dental care to persons with intellectual disabilities. In addition, the project also aims to create restraint-free dental care for individuals with intellectual disabilities and actively engage them in planning for their care through a shared decision-making approach (Obeidat et al., 2022)Dental Care for Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities Essay Assignment. Professionals will understand and incorporate approaches that enhance diversity and shared decision-making and apply measures that tailor the needs of the persons with intellectual disability as an underserved patient population. In this approach, professionals will also target the enforcement of diversity measures in dental care approaches and address the existing disparities that affect the care of this population.

Dental Care for Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities
My project is to collaborate with a rural dentist in assisting individuals with intellectual disabilities to obtain dental care without restraints. Going to the dentist can be challenging for anyone due to fear and anxiety. For individuals with intellectual disabilities, these challenges are amplified. For instance, they may struggle with understanding and following complex dental instructions, or they may have difficulty sitting still during procedures. Finding a dentist who understands how to deal with these unique challenges is essential to receiving the proper dental care. However, finding a dentist who knows how to handle the fear and anxiety of individuals with disabilities proves even more challenging, especially in a rural setting. As a nurse living and working in a rural setting, I noticed that dentists are not prepared to work with individuals with intellectual disabilities.
The remainder of this paper will provide an analysis of this topic through the four general education lenses. (As this is a proposal for action, it may be better to recommend you work with a number of dentists in your area rather than just one. No need to reduce project concept ot just one office.)Dental Care for Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities Essay Assignment
Analysis of the Dental Care of Individuals with ID through the Historical Lens
Developmental disabilities such as autism, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, or others create challenges in accomplishing daily activities, especially self-care. People with these disabilities may need extra help to achieve and maintain good health, including oral health. Bershadsky & Kane (2010) reported that dental care is especially important for person with ID/DD due to various reasons including use of antiseizure medications and poor oral hygiene. They felt that the place of residence affects the routine dental care of the individual. I currently work for an organization that supports individuals with intellectual disabilities and have recognized that we have a difficult time finding a dentist who can provide routine dental care without requesting to restrain the individual physically or chemically. The person-centered approach in healthcare, which emphasizes the individual’s needs and preferences, is a potential solution to these challenges, offering a more inclusive and effective approach to dental care for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Analysis of the Dental Care of Individuals with ID through the Humanities Lens
Individuals with ID face obstacles when it comes to dental care. The barriers are architectural, communication, or information hindrances and psychological, economic, and social problems. The procedures performed on patients with intellectual disability are more time-consuming and require more physical and emotional involvement from supportive and medical staff due to hampered cooperation. However, one of the most crucial aspects of dental treatment for patients with intellectual disabilities is cultural sensitivity. Dental professionals need to recognize the specific challenges ID patients face, such as communication difficulties, behavioral issues, anxiety, and sensory sensitivities, and adapt their approach accordingly. There are several articles addressing the issue of dental care for individuals with ID, highlighting the need for cultural sensitivity in this context. (Area for improvement will be to identify where this issue is a focus in music, movies, art, movies, leather, literature, etc. that illustrates how this issue has been seen in society over the years.)
Analysis of the Dental Care of Individuals with ID through the Natural / Applied Science Lens
When discussing dental care for individuals with intellectual disabilities, adapting an approach to meet their unique needs is essential. Intellectual disability is a developmental disorder characterized by challenges in mental and adaptive functioning. It varies in severity, and affected individuals may face difficulties in daily life skills. In the context of dental care, these challenges can manifest in various ways. For instance, individuals with intellectual disabilities may have difficulty understanding and following dental instructions, or they may have sensory sensitivities that make dental procedures uncomfortable. These unique needs and challenges require a tailored approach to dental care.
The scientific method is a systematic approach scientists use to investigate natural phenomena, make observations, and draw conclusions based on empirical evidence. In my research, I am applying the scientific method to examine aspects of dental care for individuals with intellectual disabilities. For example, I am observing and identifying specific aspects related to dental care for individuals with intellectual disabilities, such as their oral health status and the barriers they face in accessing dental care. This rigorous approach ensures that my findings are based on solid evidence and can be trusted. Dental care for individuals with intellectual disabilities involves adapting skills, addressing disparities, considering coexisting conditions, and ensuring comprehensive care. Working with ID individuals might pose a challenge for me in viewing my topic objectively because I am passionate about the individuals receiving the care they need without being restrained. Analysis of the Dental Care of Individuals with ID through the Social Science Lens
Current research suggests that people living with long-term disabled conditions, such as mental illness or learning difficulty, have poorer oral health (Scambler & Curtis, 2019). Caries rates are higher among individuals with learning disabilities and less likely to be treated. When treated, it often results in extractions. Social barriers to dental care include the lack of training specific to ID/DD of the dental professionals, along with poor communication skills and lack of trust in staff turnover. (Area for improvement will be to identify how people and groups of people interact in relationship to, or because of the issue that will be the foundation of your collaborative project.)
