The Cell Morphology Assignment Discussion

Cell morphology refers to the structure and shape of a cell. The shape of a cell dictates its growth, movement, reproduction, and obtaining of nutrients (Khan & Farhana, 2022). The human cell is eukaryotic. Eukaryotic cells have rod-shaped chromosomes, several membrane-bound organelles such as mitochondria, and a nucleus. The human cell also has a plasma membrane that controls the movement of oxygen, ions, water, and nutrients in and out of the cell. The plasma membrane ensures the movement of wastes such as carbon dioxide out of the cell.  The Cell Morphology Assignment Discussion

A 15-year-old male presents to the facility after ingesting windshield wiper fluid to get high. Certain changes occur concerning sodium levels, osmolarity, and oncotic pressure. Windshield wiper fluid contains methanol and lesser amounts of other toxic alcohols such as ethylene glycol. Methanol and the other alcohols accumulate in the blood, causing increased osmolality, while metabolites accumulate to cause an increased anion gap (Ashurst & Nappe, 2022). normal levels of sodium ions, chloride ions, glucose, bicarbonate ions, and urea maintain serum osmolality within a normal range of 285 mOsm/L to 290 mOsm/L. measured serum osmolality is usually ten mOsm/L plus or minus the calculated serum osmolality (Shah & Mandiga, 2021)The Cell Morphology Assignment Discussion. Accumulation of methanol and other alcohols increases the measured serum osmolality above the calculated serum osmolality, leading to an osmolal gap. Methanol, the largest composition of windshield wiper fluid, has a molecular weight of 32.04, which causes a serum osmolality effect of 3.09 mOsm/L per 10 mg/dL. Windshield wiper fluid increases oncotic pressure, preventing the cell from drawing in water. Excessive amounts of methanol in the wiper fluid causes sodium imbalance and hypernatremia; therefore, the 15-year-old patient will experience neuromuscular signs and symptoms.
