Overview of the study
The article, “Use of electronic health records and standardized terminologies: A nationwide survey of nursing staff experiences”, by De Groot and others seeks to present the results of a nationwide survey among nursing staff to explore their experiences with the use of electronic health records and standardized terminologies. The research problem being address is whether nursing staff actually feel supported, in providing nursing care, by the use of electronic health records that include standardized terminologies. The abstract makes it clear that this is not a simply issue, showing that it has implications for the standardized terminologies that nursing staff use, extent to which they feel supported by the use of electronic health records, and extent to which the support is associated with the standardized terminologies used in electronic health records. Strengths of the study
There are three strengths of the study. First, targeted issue is well addressed as it collects primary data in regards to a specific problem/issue at hand. It makes use of procedures that fit the problem best thus allowing the researchers to concentrate and address the issue specific to the situation in the selected facility/organization. With this approach, it is possible to reveal problems for which timely remedial measures may be instituted in the facility (Hall & Roussel, 2022). Second, it offers unbiased information. Weakness of the study
There are three weaknesses of the study. First, it does not provide a basis for comparison. This is unlike secondary research that compares ideas from different sources with a focus on solving a problem and proving that the solution is more efficient and effective for the targeted issue. Although documents can tremendously vary in quality, secondary research engages many documents, such as papers, books, articles and journals written by professionals that may be more valuable than responses from a questionnaire (Kaakinen et al., 2018). Second, the methodology (questionnaire) lacks depths. The questionnaire is standardized, thus making it difficult to ask any additional questions other than very general questions that a broad range of participants can understand. Due to the general nature of the questions, the results may not be as valid as would be the case other methods were used to comprehensively collect information, such as use of interviews that allow the research to comprehensively examine the issue being researched. Third, the methodology is inflexible. If during the course of the study, the researchers discovered that some of the questions were not well phrased or that additional questions were needed, then it would be too late to make changes if responses have started coming in. at this state, it is too late as some of the responses would be coming in, such that making a change to the questions or doing a do-over would not be possible. The critique identifies three strengths and weaknesses of the research that can be targeted to improve the quality of the study. Implications for nursing practice
The article argues for the development of user-friendly electronic health records designs. It notes that only about 56% of nursing staff use standardized terminology in their electronic health records. The standardized terminology used are varied. In addition, the electronic health records use policies should support the use of standardized terminologies to include ensuring that nursing staff receive adequate training on the use.
