The ratio of nurses to patients is directly proportional to the quality of care offered to patients. Low quality care means a higher mortality that is preventable (Dall’Ora et al., 2022; Griffiths et al., 2018; Needleman et al., 2019).
Nurse-patient ratios have to take into account the patient acuity or the level of care required by each patient. For instance, a patient in the intensive care unit (ICU) may be allocated one nurse alone. In the general wards, one nurse may be responsible for 4 patients. When there is a shortage of nurses, there is a difficulty in balancing the skill mix for the nurse manager such that the balance in the ratios becomes destabilized.

The evidence will not necessarily address all the elements of your PICO(T) question, so select the most important concepts to search and find the best evidence available.
  • Reflect on the process of creating a PICO(T) question and searching for peer-reviewed research.
