Discussion Response
Thank you, Maryann, for your input on the discussion. I agree that as the world shifts to incorporate technology, the healthcare sector has not been left out. Specific technological trends have significantly impacted healthcare delivery and patient outcomes. I see you mentioned the application of AI to help with disease detection. Additionally, using AI in healthcare has helped manage massive unstructured data used for analysis (Bohr & Memarzadeh, 2020)Transforming Healthcare Through Technology Discussion. For example, AI can help analyze information on the spread of infectious diseases, vaccine distribution, and data from living cells. I also see you mentioned Nano medicine as an emerging healthcare trend that I believe can help improve nursing practice by ensuring the comprehensive improvement of human biological systems.

I agree that telehealth has also impacted service delivery, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic. Telehealth allows patients to access healthcare services without physically visiting a provider. The trend has benefited populations living in rural areas and those with chronic conditions. However, a significant challenge associated with telehealth is information safety (Gajarawala & Pelkowski, 2021). Organizations that use this form of trend must ensure they protect patient information. This may involve complying with HIPAA standards on technology implementation. I also agree that patient portals are becoming impactful in healthcare. Patient portals ensure that patients have convenient access to healthcare services through a secure online website. This has helped improve patient outcomes and cut healthcare costs as patients actively engage with their providers without physically visiting the facility (Dendere et al., 2019). Therefore, organizations must conduct their organizational need to identify the most appropriate technology that will help improve patient outcomes and efficiencyTransforming Healthcare Through Technology Discussion.

There are many current technology trends in healthcare. As the world has shifted to computer technology, healthcare has also found it is highly dependent on technology to improve patient outcomes. Many promising trends are emerging in 2022. One trend is new AI applications to help with the detection of diseases. There is also new data breach prevention technology. With a dramatic increase in data breaches in healthcare in the last decade, cyber security and healthcare are a top tech trend in 2022. Nanomedicine is also a current health care technology trend. Nanomedicine is a branch of medicine using nanotechnology. Technology trends in nanomedicine include tissue engineering and comprehensive control of human systems (2022)Transforming Healthcare Through Technology Discussion.
Telehealth is a widely known innovative technology trend in healthcare. Telehealth became a widely used resource during the COVID-19 pandemic and is still a popular option with providers today. Telehealth offers many benefits such as easy access, decreased exposure to germs in the provider’s office, and ensures patients can make appointments.
My current employer does utilize Telehealth in our outpatient area. The company does not currently have EHR (Electronic Health Records) or any computerized charting. Still, Telehealth has helped our outpatient population to be able to have access to providers without ever entering the office.
With any technology, there are potential challenges. For instance, with EHR, there is an increase in cyber-attacks with nanomedicine, there is always a safety risk for the patient, and costs can also be a concern.
Patient portals are a promising technology trend that has taken off in the last few years. A benefit of using patient portals is the ease of making appointments, requesting referrals, checking insurance benefits, viewing test results, patient education, and more. Some portals offer E-visits for minor issues, saving patients time and money (2021)Transforming Healthcare Through Technology Discussion.
With all modern technology, there is a risk. Some challenges in using patient portals are concerns with patient security and user confusion. Some patients also report alienation between themselves and the provider. Patients with decreased health literacy can resist using online tools offered in the patient portals (Clark, 2021).
There are legal considerations for patient portals, although there is no established regulatory or legal precedent on enforcing the access of portals. Some states, such as Massachusetts, have followed a federal legislative path to enact additional laws to mandate in-person medical interpretation (Lyles et al., 2017).

I believe that patient portals are the way of the future. Even with the challenges, the benefits will far outweigh any risk. As an advanced practice nurse, patient portals increase efficiency and improve provider/patient communication. They easily store patient information in one convenient location, thus helping to reduce errors. The efficiency of patient portals promises to increase patient outcomes and make for an easier workflow for the advanced practice nurse.
