The Concept Analysis Assignment Paper

The Concept Analysis Assignment Paper

 Introduction

The concept of self-care is still not precise as a result of the difficulty of incorporating the different definitions across disciplines. It is important to formulate the defining attributes, antecedents, and consequences of self-care so as to offer clinicians, patients, and clinicians with the capability to effectively communicate with each other and establish lines of responsibility. The purpose of this assignment is to provide an analysis of the concept of self-care. The Concept Analysis Assignment Paper

Definition/Explanation of the selected nursing concept (Self-care)

The Cambridge dictionary defines self-care as the practice of caring for oneself when one is ill or to stop one from becoming ill. Also, the Cambridge dictionary defines self-care as the practice of engaging in activities that are relaxing or that one enjoys, particularly avoiding or improving stress. The World Health Organization defines self-care as the abilities of communities, families, or individuals to prevent disease, maintain health promote health, and to cope with disability and illness without or with the support of a health worker.

According to Chipu and Downing (2020), self-care is the process of engaging in activities to care for oneself so as to preserve an individual’s health in the absence of medical consultation.  The process entails a person making an independent choice to improve their health through attaining skills and knowledge through education and interrelating with other people to promote the spiritual, physical, emotional, and mental being  The Concept Analysis Assignment Paper

Three defining attributes

Attributes are characteristics that constantly emerge when the concept of self-care is present or when the concept is been described in the literature, and assist in shedding light on the concept.  Self-reliance, self-control, and awareness are attributes of the concept of self-care.

Awareness: When individuals experience normal health and development, they do not t put health concerns into consideration. Rather, awareness is important for the individual to take care of their needs. This awareness together with skills and knowledge empowers and motivates the individual to focus on their quality of life and behavior. Individuals self-monitor symptoms because they are aware of and able to measure and interpret the symptoms. Recognition and evaluation of symptoms trigger self-care (Martinez et al., 2021)The Concept Analysis Assignment Paper.

Self-reliance:  To be able to effectively perform self-care, the person must be self-reliant. The notion of self-reliance is deeply entrenched in the management of chronic diseases and reflected in the administration of medication and compliance with health care plans. Self-reliance has a direct influence on the incorporation of the patient and his/ her family into self-care, and it mirrors the perseverance and resilience of the person (Martinez et al., 2021)The Concept Analysis Assignment Paper.

Self-control:  self-care results from an individual acting as a unitary being and partaking in control and regulation of their emotions and self.  Control and regulation of the self are fundamental to the attainment of cognitive approaches to regulation, prevention, and self-care.  Also, the World Health Organization asserts that prevention and control of a health condition mirror self-care practices.  Self-control is strengthened with self-reliance and awareness (Martinez et al., 2021)The Concept Analysis Assignment Paper.

1 Antecedent and 1 Consequence of the concept

Antecedents are the essential skills needed before an event occurs. Social, professional, and spiritual support is an antecedent of self-care. According to Chipu and Downing (2020) interacting with colleagues, friends, and family members offer professional, spiritual, and social support required during self-care. The practice of self-care involves engaging in non-toxic and meaningful relationships. Team-building activities at the place of work make a person to feeling connected and they might not be related to religion.  Team building activities and teamwork at the workplace is supported to heighten team spirit.   Social self-care refers to activities refer to the interactions and relationships that are created and sustained as professional and personal support systems.  Certain activities like spending time with family, a spouse, or friends can be carried out to reinforce these activities. Socializing with finds is meaningful as well as supportive.  A person can achieve spiritual self-care by spending time in nature or in a spiritual community, attending worship, meditating, praying, and performing spiritual activities.

A consequence is the outcome of the demonstration of the concept.   Maintenance of well-being and health is a consequence that can be brought about by self-care. Chipu and Downing (2020) posit that practicing self-care leads to long-term professional and personal benefits like maintaining wellbeing and health. The maintenance of wellbeing and health relates to preventing the occurrence of disease with self-care as well as being spiritually, psychologically, and physically healthy The Concept Analysis Assignment Paper.

Model Case

Adams, a forty-five-year-old man sustained a four-centimeter superficial would in his left leg when he was hiking with his wife. He took care of the wound by cleaning it every day with water and soap and offering sufficient dressing changes.  Within one week, the wound had completely healed and Mike was able to go back o hiking with his wife. This case represents model care since Adams has displayed the defining attributes of self-care (self-reliance, self-control, and awareness). After becoming aware of the injury, Adams was in control and had adequate self-reliance to sufficiently care for himself and properly attend to the wound. Adam’s self-care supported the availability of adequate resources, self-care agency, and cognition.   (Martinez et al., 2021)The Concept Analysis Assignment Paper.

Theoretical Applications of the Concept:

Dorothea Orem pioneered the concept of deficit care in her self-care Deficit Nursing Theory. In the SCDNT, self-care is defined as the practices that persons initiate and carry out to maintain their wellbeing, health, and life.   Martinez et al. (2021) posit that according to Orem, self-care is a learned and intentionally executed action used in the regulation of functioning and development. Within the self-care deficit theory, self-care is the agent of action and also the object of the action. Self-care is a developmental process indicative of well-being, life, and health.

According to Orem’s self-care deficit nursing theory, self-care is regarded as actions that individuals engage in to improve, restore, or maintain their health. Nurses do not regard patients as dormant and mere receivers of health care service; instead, they view patients as responsible, reliable, strong, capable of making decisions, and who have the ability to appropriately take care of their health (Khademian et al. 2020).   Rosman et al. (2022) emphasize that Orem assumes that humans are distinct persons with a communal basic need of maintaining their conditions of living. People are autonomous and liable for their own self-care, with self-care being a conscious action with the aim of fulfilling a certain need. Conscious actions are not innate but rather are learned via interactions and communications with other people. Both patients and nurses are viewed as conscious, action-oriented, and rational individuals who are capable of taking purposeful actions that are in their best interest.

The general concepts of the self-care deficit nursing theory comprise self-care/ dependent care, self-care requisite, dependent care deficit/ deficit -care deficit, therapeutic self-care demand, dependent care agency/self-care agency, and two concepts related to nursing,  that is,  nursing agency and nursing systems. According to Irshad (2018)The Concept Analysis Assignment Paper, self-care is the commencement of activities by a person to maintain his life, improve well-being and achieve optimal health.  Self-care agency is the ability of a person to engage in self-care and is influenced by the basic conditioning factors, which are related to both the nurse and the self-care agent. Basic conditioning factors include health and developmental state, patterns of living, gender, age, family and health care system, the availability and sufficiency of the needed resources, and sociocultural and environmental factors.   Therapeutic self-care demand is the full amount of self-care actions that an individual performs for some time with the intention of meeting self-care requisites through the utilization of proper methods and actions (Irshad, 2018).

Self-care deficit is a situation where nursing is needed. Nursing is needed when an adult is incapable of or has a limitation that does not permit them to meet their self-care needs. A nursing agency is the property of an individual who is a well-trained and educated nurse who permits the patient to be aware of, recognize and assist them fulfill their therapeutic self-care demands through the development of their self-care agency.  Nursing systems involve the relationship of a patient and a nurse having an entirely compensatory system, supportive educative system, and partly compensatory system.  The activation of this system occurs when the therapeutic self-care demand of the client increases compared to the existing self-care agency which leads to the requirement for nursing. The requisites of self-care are universal(social interaction, solitude, rest, food, water, air), health deprivation, developmental, and therapeutic (Irshad, 2018)The Concept Analysis Assignment Paper.

Reflection:

From the analysis, I have learned that self-care is the ability of a person to care for himself or herself so as to attain, promote, or maintain optimal well-being and health. A person should have awareness, self-control, and self-reliance to be able to engage in self-care.  From this understanding, my role as a nurse practitioner is to provide nursing care and promote self-care behaviors in patients who have limitations that render them incapable of meeting their self-care needs. Apart from promoting self-care behaviors in patients, it is my duty to engage in self-care activities so as to promote my own health and well-being. Failure to engage in self-care means that I will experience a self-care deficit and I will be required to depend on another person to meet my self-care needs The Concept Analysis Assignment Paper.

Conclusion

The analysis of the concept of self-care has identified a clear definition. Self-care is the ability of an individual to care for him/herself through awareness, self-reliance and self control so as to attain, promote of maintain optimal wellbeing and health.  Self-care is a process on actively making decisions that enables individuals effectively engage in their care. Orem self-care deficit theory is a nursing theory  that pioneered the concept and defines self-care as   practices that persons initiate and carry out to maintain their wellbeing, health, and life
