Competencies In Handling Leadership And Ethical Management Discussion

Impact of a Leader

For this paper, I will talk about the strengths and limitations of one of the nurse managers I have previously worked with within practice. They encouraged me to include up-to-date research into my care delivery in an attempt to achieve better results for the patients while boosting my performance as a nurse. This shift was achieved by the managers encouraging the staff to assume accountability and develop a meaningful perspective of the impact of adherence to best practices on patient outcomes, thus enhancing my practice.

The manager’s influence on the practice environment was rather significant. The second action was maintaining open lines of communication and encouraging teamwork by making every team member feel important. This environment further translated to high job satisfaction, reduced turnover, and more cohesiveness in the team, making the team more productive in problem-solving and delivering quality care. Another positive outcome was that the morale of the unit was higher, or there was less turnover and more interest in quality improvement projects. This was supplemented by a positive culture of the staff career, which fostered continuity of professional development.

By applying the AONL competencies, it is identified that the Manager demonstrates competence in communication and relationship management leadership skills. I saw them effectively managing morale within their teams, intervening in challenging conversations with compassion and understanding, and creating healthy organizational cultures. In their capacity as nurses, their competencies in handling leadership and ethical management conformed well with AONL competencies. Still, at the end of the academic year, the Manager might have improved in financial management; however, the lack of funds was the reason for resource scarcity, which influenced the team.

To complement this reflection, Mazzetti and Schaufeli (2022) discuss leadership in promoting the organizational work environment, noting that leaders, including the Manager, can play crucial roles in enhancing teamwork and patient care outcomes.
