The Implementation And Use Of Evidence Based Practice Discussion

Discussion

Dissemination of EBP is important since it ensures that the research results and EBPs are translated into clinical practice and applied to solve clinical problems in clinical settings. The process enables certain information to reach the target audience such as patients, nurses, medical practitioners, stakeholders, and policymakers. In a health organization, it is true that dissemination of EBP tickles down from top leadership such as nurse leaders to implementers such as nurses and patients (Fencl & Matthews, 2017). Effective dissemination and implementation of EBP require shared governors and collaboration of leaders and employees (LoBiondo-Wood et al., 2018)The Implementation And Use Of Evidence Based Practice Discussion. One of the effective dissemination strategies is face-to-face discussion. An advantage to this strategy is that it is faster and the feedback is almost immediate. However, the information only reaches a few people who are present at the discussion. Nonetheless, the information can be recorded and passed to other target audiences who did not attend the discussion hence widening the audience coverage.

One advantage of disseminating EBP through social media is that it is rapid and has wider audience coverage since healthcare professionals and patients are able to exchange information globally. Findings of a study indicate that the use of social media to disseminate EBP among healthcare professionals and patients significantly improved awareness, knowledge, compliance, and positive behavior toward EBP (Bhatt et al., 2021). However, most people regard information on social media as informal and unprofessional. According to findings of a study done by Ross & Cross (2019), this is evidenced by the fact that students use social media more than nurse academics and most postings of health and medical-related issues are done by novices as compared to more senior healthcare leaders hence leading to dissemination of low-quality information. For formal and professional dissemination strategies, you can use alternatives such as conferences, workshops, and seminars for dissemination within your healthcare organization and peer-reviewed journals for dissemination globally (LoBiondo-Wood et al., 2018)The Implementation And Use Of Evidence Based Practice Discussion.

Implementation and use of EBP in the workplace starts at the administrative level and trickles down to those who will be implementing practices based on EBP. If an organization’s executive prioritizes the use of EBP this will reflect on those underneath them and work its way down to nurse managers which set the tone for each unit. Understanding one’s leader’s perspective on EBP helps formulate a plan to disseminate information obtained from EBP. If there are changes that need to be made based on EBP dissemination of this information is vital to practice and policy changes (Melnyk & Fineout-Overhold, 2018).

Shared governance and EBP have been linked to successful implementation of EBP in many hospitals (Fisher & Hubbard, 2015). In my organization, we have shared governance which allows staff from each unit to discuss things that need to be changed whether it is organization-wide or just on the unit. From each unit’s shared governance the leader brings appropriate topics to the hospital committees that meet once a month to discuss issues in the organization. From here, if there is a need, policy changes are made. I would disseminate EBP to my shared governance committee through a speech. I would informally discuss with my peers the EBP I found and the changes that need to be made. I would utilize this form of dissemination at this level because this committee is an informal meeting with a group of peers. I would lay out the evidence and what the suggested practice change would be and see what their thoughts on the topic would be. From my unit committee, I would meet with the hospital committee to discuss the EBP. At the hospital-wide committee on EBP I would put together a PowerPoint that outlines the search done to find reliable EBP, the sources I found with their results, and suggested practice changes based on the evidence found. In a study by Kramer, et al. 2021, PowerPoint presentation was found to be the most effective method of presenting research. PowerPoints are easy and effective at getting points across by presenting the information in a simple way. The downfall to utilizing the presentation method to disseminate information is keeping the audience’s attention. A way that I would overcome this challenge would be to ensure the information is relevant to the audience and making sure the information was to the point by avoiding overloading the audience with information that is not relevant The Implementation And Use Of Evidence Based Practice Discussion.

One method of dissemination I would avoid using is social media. It is easy to post about new information you found and the changes that could be made based on these findings, but using social media makes it unformal. I think that no one in the hospital would take my EBP seriously if I just posted this to social media. Another downfall to utilizing social media is people are skeptical of the reliability of things posted online (Bhatt et al., 2020). Another method of dissemination I would avoid using would be passing around flyers or putting up posters. While doing this may spread around to my co-workers the changes that need to be implemented would need to be done by executives. Having the flyers may work to gain support for changes to be made, but it would do little for taking any action from the results of EBP The Implementation And Use Of Evidence Based Practice Discussion
