I work at Inova Fairfax Hospital, Virginia, a 923-bed medical facility that serves the community centered on Northern Virginia (Inova, 2022). The facility has a safety committee titled ‘Hospital Safety Committee (HSC). This multidisciplinary committee is responsible for the analysis and resolution of environment of care issues. The committee is comprised of representatives from planning, patient safety, risk management, nursing, administration, hazardous materials, environmental health and safety, biomedical engineering, and hospital maintenance. The committee’s mission statement is: engaging a process of continuous improvement in safety through analyzing and resolving environment of care issues in the hospital will better insure safety for staff, patients and visitors (Leape, 2021)The Safety Committees Discussion Paper.
The committee operates as a performance improvement team to which environment of care issues are reported with the committee investigating the reported issues via data collection, then evaluates and recommends an action plan to the hospital leadership. It routinely addresses emergency management concerns, utility systems management problems/failures, equipment management problems, fire-safety management deficiencies, hazardous materials and waste exposure/spills, security incidents, and occupational injuries/illness (Davis, 2020). The committee meets at least six times every years to address quality, patient safety, risk management, environment of care, and other issues as appropriate. It maintains the minutes of each meeting, with the minutes summarizing the issues identified, materials presented, recommendations made, and action plans undertaken. In addition, the minutes include a tracking log designed to manage all issues addressed by the committee until they are resolved (Davis, 2020)The Safety Committees Discussion Paper.
The committee is a good use of the staff at the facility. It bears the responsibility of ensuring safety of all across the facility. It has a wide scope that focuses on ensuring uniform policy making and actions with respect to safety as concerns staff mobilization in emergencies and disasters, utility systems management, fire safety management, security incidences, hazardous materials and wastes, occupational injuries/illness, property damage, and injuries to patients and visitors. The developed policies must be based upon best safety practices and regulations, to include emergency codes, sentinel and adverse events, safety guidelines, and mechanisms for tracking and reporting safety issues (Huber & Joseph, 2022)The Safety Committees Discussion Paper.
