X-ray Interpretation

The video highlights the four main assessment areas to help determine a chest radiograph’s quality. These areas are penetration, inspiration, rotation, and angulation. I have learned that to qualify a chest X-ray as being well penetrated, one needs to see the thoracic spine through the heart. Consequently, an underpenetrated film will be one in which the thoracic vertebrae cannot be seen through the heart. Inspiration is assessed through the number of posterior ribs that can be counted on the X-ray crossing the Hemi-diaphram. In good inspiration, one should count at least eight to nine posterior ribs in a hospitalized patient. Rotation is assessed by measuring the distance between the clavicle’s medial ends and the vertebrae’s spinous processes. The clavicles should be equidistant from the spinous process, and the direction of the rotation is towards the contralateral to the side, with the clavicle closer to the spinous processes. Lastly, there is the angulation issue, where the X-ray beam’s direction can give unique views of the chest, such as apical lordotic. This view is produced with the X-ray beam directed towards the head. Consequently, the film will have an abnormally shaped heart and blunted left costophrenic angles. The common occupational hazards associated with performing medical imaging procedures can broadly be classified as physical, health, or biological problems from exposure to ionizing radiation or from the accidental ingestion of radioactive pollutants (Shimaa, Sorour, & Mahmoud, 2018). The health problems include the development of various cancers, with women having a higher thyroid and breast cancer lifetime attributable risk than men who demonstrate a higher colon cancer lifetime attributable risk (Lee et al., 2018). Recent studies demonstrate lower levels of knowledge regarding cancer risk from natural background radiation and those primarily associated with computerized tomography (Sweetman & Bernard, 2019). Therefore, there is a need for continued professional education on occupational health and safety and hazards in radiology workers.
