The Role of Technology in Improving Health Care Outcomes

Students are required to submit weekly journal entries throughout the course. These reflective narratives help students identify important learning events that happen throughout the course and the practicum. In each week’s entry, students should reflect on the personal knowledge and skills gained.

Write a reflection journal (250-300 words) to outline what has been discovered about your professional practice, personal strengths and weaknesses, and additional resources that could be introduced in a given situation to influence optimal outcomes. Each week there will be a specific focus to use in your reflection. Integrate leadership and inquiry into the current practice. Please make sure to address all areas in your writing The Role of Technology in Improving Health Care Outcomes.

In my practice, I have learned that technology is becoming a fundamental aspect of healthcare, from data management, decision-making, and provision of healthcare services. The integration of technology in healthcare has impacted healthcare outcomes by enhancing efficiency and healthcare outcomes (Ruiz Morilla et al., 2017). In my organization, I have identified various technologies that have been implemented to improve health outcomes. Such include electronic health records that have significantly contributed to data management. Telehealth whereby, patients can access healthcare services remotely without physically visiting the facility. With EHRs, medical errors have been reduced significantly thus improving patient safety. With telehealth, patients especially those in rural areas with chronic illnesses can access healthcare easily.

In regards to technology, I have identified my strength in utilizing electronic health records especially when it comes to ordering, refilling, and prescriptions. However, a major weakness I have identified is taking a while for me to quickly understand how a certain technology works. However, through practice, I can improve my skills. To optimize patient outcomes, an organization must assess its needs. Recently, after conducting a need assessment, it was established that in-patients lack the means to contact providers for assistance. To address the issue, the organization implemented medical alert systems where patients can contact providers in case of a medical issue or emergency. This helped optimize patient outcomes by ensuring that patients are always attended to when they need help.

Strong leadership is fundamental to the successful implementation and adoption of technologies. Leaders play a vital role in ensuring effective communication and collaboration during technology implementation (McKay & Vanaskie, 2018)The Role of Technology in Improving Health Care Outcomes. By deploying different leadership styles, nurse leaders can influence their subordinates to the adoption of new technologies.
